Jekyll & Hyde Pedal is working AGAINST my amp

hey,

ive always used my visual sound jeckyll & hyde pedal with much pride. i love the tihng, can get nearly ANY sound and makes my avt275 sound great!.

lately, ive been unimpressd with it. it seems tob e working against the amp rather than with it.

basically i have my amp oin clean, with about a qurter gain, half bass, quarter middle and 3 quartes treble.

and on ym jeckyll & hyde if i use the hyde chanel (modern deistortion) I have drive, tone EQ and volume aswell as a sharp/blunt switch.

right if im using clean tone on those setting then kick in the HYDE side of ym pedal, with tyhe sharp setting on, it seems to make such a harsh sound, not sweet at all.

do you think i should use middle settings on everythign for the Amp? then try and get the tone i want throuhg the pedal alone?

i used to be overjoyed with the setings but after playing i just cant get the sweet spot i once loved.

basically, im only half happy using the bvlunr side as its not quite the solund im after, but playing witht he sharp side i jsut cant get this right. i know its down to personal rpeferece and testing. but would anyone reccomend using 'middle' amp setings on everything?

thanks

I've never owned a OD/Boost/Distortion pedal

sorry dude

I've tried some, for fun...

Re: Jekyll & Hyde Pedal is working AGAINST my amp

i set my tone controls to about 10 o'clock or it tends to get to sharp or trebly for me. i don't use the sharp/blunt switches at all and try to get it right against my amp eq because it just doesn't work for me trying to use the eq from the pedal.

i have a half-assed clip i recorded with my j&h pedal and a marshall jvm when i was first learning cliffs of dover note-for-note. typically my amp eq is set to 12 o'clock bass, 1 o'clock mids, and 11 o'clock treble. the eq and tone controls of my j&h are set to about 11 o'clock. i know it's not a great clip or anything, but i think i managed to get a pretty cool sound with it.

hope that helps some, good luck

thats cool.

i have a newer (red) J&H and i dont think you cna not use the blunt/sharp switch. im going to keep fiddling and trying.

but ill set he EQ to 11 o clock and try getting my amp souning a bi sweeter.

what gain do you have no a clean channel when using a jeckyll & Hyde?

yep, the i have the same one. on that clip i used a little bit of amp gain and set the jeckle side to 12 o'clock. normally i like to use the jeckle side at 9 o'clock and the hyde side at 1 o'clock on a real clean channel for like a kind of rock tone.

on a clean channel i also like to use the jeckle side at 3 o'clock to get a bluesy kind of tone. other times i use it with other pedals. i'm still experimenting with amps though, so i haven't settled down yet.

Re: Jekyll & Hyde Pedal is working AGAINST my amp

Maybe you've simply not the same player anymore, now you need different things from your pedal?

Re: Jekyll & Hyde Pedal is working AGAINST my amp

hmm im not sure. i still like the same tones.

i jsut cant seemto get the right mix between my amp and my pedal. il havew to do a lot more trying and testing.

Re: Jekyll & Hyde Pedal is working AGAINST my amp

I don't use the Hyde side of mine very much any more, and only really using the Jekyll side as a boost. I have the older grey one. I used to use the Hyde side as a metal-type tone, which I don't really need at the mo.

Re: Jekyll & Hyde Pedal is working AGAINST my amp

yeah itsa great pedal...im not dissing the pedal or anytihng. its jsut ive startd favouring the avt's normal distortion over the hyde side which i used to tink was amazing.

im after a sort of punk/rock/indie type sound.

im going to keep trying anyway.

i think that's a good idea. it's a good pedal, but as i've learned, pedals don't always fit with every amp. i've heard also that you put settings on a tube amp and expect to get the exact same sound the next day. david gilmour says he changes his settings every day because of this. i don't know how credible that is since i'm not an amp expert, but it sounds reasonable i guess.

one thing i noticed was that i like to do the same thing with the hyde side that i normally do with the jeckle side and that's use it on a low setting in conjunction with my amp gain. i'm starting to really like some of the tones i get like that.

Re: Jekyll & Hyde Pedal is working AGAINST my amp

I think its true, Criss Oliva used to have different EQ each niight, but if you watch him on you tube live, he always had his tone. I've heard that YJM does the same. My AOR is played in only two places now, my livingroom and my friends garage with live drums and bass, in the garage EQ changes not by much but it does, now I remember how I was always blaming the drunkards inthe clubs when my tone would suck, well back then I believed that "I own a Marshall JCM2000" its this crap's hole PA that F's everything up, yeah right ...

I find that it works better with an amps gain than it does into a clean setting.

Re: Jekyll & Hyde Pedal is working AGAINST my amp

yeah I find that too. I use a fairly clean channel on my marshall, then boost it with the red side of the jekyll and hyde, not too much gain on the pedal though, and then yeah you get a nice crunch going.

Re: Jekyll & Hyde Pedal is working AGAINST my amp

I haven't played one, but I saw a guy use one into a clean amp and I thought the distortion side (Hyde?) sounded like butt. Now to be fair, a Tube Screamer, Boss DS-1, SD1, and lots of other OD/Distortion pedals sound lousy through a truly clean amp too. It's like they're looking for that rounding off the edges from a pushed amp. So for gritty tones I usually use tube preamps, and use the OD's as boosts or texturizers.
