Jensen C10Q comparison

Could anybody let me know how the Jensen C10Q would compare to the Celestion Tube 10... has anyone used them in the same amp.

Also curious to know how the C10Q would compare to a Weber Silver ten?

Cheers!

Re: Jensen C10Q comparison

Go for a Weber C10NQ. It's a speaker that uses the lightweight cone of the '66 Jensen C10Q and '58 P10Q but couples it with the beefy magnet and voice coil of a mid 60's Jensen C10N.

The new Jensen C10Q is to bright and edgey, IMO. It breaks in and gets better, but it's still a little to edgey for my tastes.

I'm a huge fan Ted Weber's 10" speakers but not so much for his 12" speakers...and I'm a huge fan of Celestion's 12" speakers but not their 10" speakers.

For 12's, go for Celestion. For 10's, go for Weber.

It's not that I don't like them...I just like Celestion 12's better. And for some reason Ted has always had a little problem with "cone cry" on his undoped 12's...but when he applies a heavy coat of dope around the edge surround (like Celestion has always done) Ted's 12's lose to much brilliance and livliness.

I just think Ted does a great job on his 10" speakers and Celestion does a great job making 12's.

ok, so another dumb speaker question coming from me...what is cone cry?

Sometimes when a player is playing loud and with alot of overdrive (or not!) and you sting a note with alot of attack on the pluck, the note you're playing generates out of tune harmonics in the speaker itself - a resonance - and this sounds BAD! It's annoying and some of Ted's 12's have always suffered from cone cry to some degree.

It really depends on the player. I tend to up-pick and sting and squeeze out a lot of notes...I'm a blues player. Players who have a different style from me may never hear cone cry from a speaker that would generate so much cone cry for a player like me that I would find it unusable.

hmmm....interesting.

so i guess that leads to my next question...can i put a 10" speaker where previously there was a 12"? And if i can, any reason why i shouldnt? I only ask because i really dont want to pay 200+ for a celestion 12

You'd have to replace the baffle with an opening for a 10" speaker. I just bought a used but mint Celestion G12H30 on Ebay for $60. Just be patient and you can find plenty of great speakers for well under $200.

can you avoid cone cry by using a speaker rated significantly higher than your amp? ie a 50W speaker in a 15W BJr?

That is my lucky day, As a fan of Weber's 10" have you ever tried the Silver Ten? It seems form the description on Weber website like something that could do it for me.
