JHS AT vs Friedman OD

I haven't been able to find either locally and have watched a bunch of videos, but it is so tough to tell from youtube.

Going for a pushed Marshall type sound. Steve Stevens, Def Leppard, Van Helen-esque type tones. Do you have a preference? I'd like to add one of these to my pedalboard.

Thanks!

I haven't used either, just wondering why you have narrowed it down to these 2? There are a few dozen pedals out there that can do that tone.

Re: JHS AT vs Friedman OD

IDK.....no special reason in particular. I don't own anything from either of these companies and they both seem to be pretty well received. I'm open to any suggestions.

Re: JHS AT vs Friedman OD

For the sound you are looking for, the Wampler Pinnacle or Soveriegn, the Kasha Rockmod pedal, Catalinbread DLS, the CMATMods Brownie, and a couple dozen more.

If you are handy with a soldering iron, the BSIAB2 is a great pedal and is what a lot of the Marshall "amp in a box" pedals, like the Brownie, Pinnacle or DLS, are based on.

The original Carl Martin Plexitone (I haven't tried the Lo Gain or Single Channel versions) is *awesome* for 80s hot-rodded Marshall tones.

That and their AC-Tone are the most amp-like pedals I've ever played. Very responsive and alive, just a joy to play. Carl Martin are doing something right when it comes to emulating amp response in a box.

Bogner La Grange also gets great VH tones and is more versatile in that it can get old-school '70s Marshall tones. I would give the edge to the Plexitone in terms of amp-like response (sometimes, depending on setting, the La Grange feels like "just a pedal" rather than a good amp simulation), but both are very good Marshalls-in-a-box.

PS. I forgot to mention that while I don't own the Friedman BE-OD, I did spend some time in a store playing it, and it gets those 80s tones easily. Pete Thorn has a great YouTube demo of it where he really gets his VH on.

Re: JHS AT vs Friedman OD

Between those two I'd take the Friedman! Most of the JHS pedals including the AT are IMHO, kinda one trick ponies. Don't get me wrong, they do that one trick EXTREMELY WELL!!! The Friedman is capable of throwing out a lot more useable Cranked Plexi tones with a wider vocal range so it would be my pick!!!

There's TONS of Plexi or Brown Sound pedals on the market right now so I'd definitely look into a few others before committing to one. The Wampler Pinnacle or better yet the Pinnacle Deluxe is pretty darn amazing and so is the Bogner La Grange! Again both these pedals can give you extremely convincing Plexi tones while offering several other features as well!!! Plus the added control over almost every spectrum of the pedal's signal can come in pretty handy!!!

is the BSIAB2 the same as the byoc pedals? Are they easy to build??
