For a bigger challenge, the BYOC Silver Pony is a fairly easy but great sounding build.
I finally got it out together. It's a pretty great klone and I could get some great settings out of it. The Shamrock mod switch is pretty useful. Way better than an EHX Soul Food for the same price.
The only glaring issue with it as far as I'm concerned is there is no 9v battery option and the 9v socket is quite literally a square block in a round hole.
I don't care much for klones, but this one is definitely one of the better ones.
What was your order number? I was order 8300 and change and was hoping mine would show up before the weekend. I ended up getting a germanium Tumnus after I ordered my notaklon, probably not going to keep both, but who knows.
has it the honky mid high the klon has or is it flatter?
I don't remember the exact number but I was past the initial 3000 orders but before 5000
Besides the fact JHS is a marketing genius, I like him very much for the sense of humor which always permeates almost everything he makes.
He has a lot of detractors, in some cases motivated (his designs are generally not so original, but that's true for many manufacturers) but, for example, I'd buy this ikea like clon just for the idea, it's a form of art in my opinion.
More on topic, the Klon type sound is described as being “transparent and amp-like.” Is there much use for ot if I already love my amp sound as is? (and my overdrive for that matter?) What would it sound like directly into a power amp as though it were an “amp?”
unpopular opinion: to my ears the Klon is everything but transparent, in low gain settings is almost flat, ALMOST, you can still hear a slight bass cut, in higher gain there is a wowel hump on the mid high with significant bass and high treble roll off.
Is it useful? yes, its eq is similar to the tubescreamer but it's not that compressed so you mantain the dynamic character of your chain but pumping the mids with some crunch.
is it transparent, hell, no.
