Re: Jimi Hendrix: Little Wing

I have 5 recordings of Jimi playing this song and none of them are the same note for note.

Re: Jimi Hendrix: Little Wing

I know the whole SRV version note for note. All 6 and a half minutes of it.

That song - when I heard it for the first time, I had to play the guitar if it killed me. And the rest is history...

Re: Jimi Hendrix: Little Wing

I play it with enough of the songs content so it can be recognized, but I do it my own way. I am way to lazy to sit and try to learn it note for note. Jimis version I think is far cooler than SRV's, but SRV's version is probably the best I've heard next to the original. I use a Srat in the 4th position with the tone rolled down slightly. I start off dry than kick in the reverb and the Chorus. For the solo I use my TS9 with the gain all the way down and the volume set to boost it just a little.!

Re: Jimi Hendrix: Little Wing

I always play it differently...It's my favourite Hendrix's tune, though I prefer SRV's version

Re: Jimi Hendrix: Little Wing

I still can't see playing anything "note for note". I would much rather play my own version within the structure of the song. To me, note for note kills creativity and creates human record/cd players. Jimi didn't play everything note for note but a new version within the structure of the song. To me that inspires creativity.

Re: Jimi Hendrix: Little Wing

Anybody ever hear Steve Lukather's version? That's the way I prefer to play it. It's one of those songs that you can pour your soul into, and if you do that, it'll sound good no matter how you play it.

Re: Jimi Hendrix: Little Wing

There's the famous version from the Derek and the Dominos album recorded 8 days before Jimi's death... they decided to put it in the album because of the tragedy.
There's SRV's version (amazing...)
And there are shreders like Steve Vai or Jazz lpyers who play it (sometimes well sometimes really bad).

All are played a little diffrent then the original...

I think that there are a few lines you have to keep while playing it:
The first Am hammer on climb up.
The Bm high note strumming.
The chord sliding when you move from the G to the F.
And the move from C to D in the end of the intro... (hope you are following these).

I think that those parts will give you the feeling of the intro while you can add your own things to other chords... no point in sounding the same like everybody else while playing it...

Oh... and when I've started learnning these tune I made sure I know most of the licks exactly like the original... and then add changes (However I am still not sure I know it exactly like the original :))

Re: Jimi Hendrix: Little Wing

I was kind of hoping to hear a clip of someone doing this song. I've not learned it either but it's favorite of mine, as well. anybody have a clip?

Re: Jimi Hendrix: Little Wing

A good tip for learning the song:
Learn the chord progression first. when you know it well, learn the way he plays with the chords. It is the best way IMO to learn LW.. and to learn it fast.
Also helps your playing because you can use some of the licks in other songs.
