Re: Jimi Hendrix: Little Wing

I found another cool version of this song on iTunes the other day. It's called Little Wing (Orientale) by The Barbary Coast Guitar Duo. It's interesting because it's been arranged for two classical guitars.

Re: Jimi Hendrix: Little Wing

I play a Hybrid version some where in between Jimi and Stevie's. definitely got use your thumb to get them poly chords right. I liked the way Stevie uses the Double stop bends. For the solo it's just pure melodic emotion.:bigthumb: My version of Voodoo child ( Slight return) is a cross breed of Jimi's and SRV.

I don't play it note for note... I think it's one of those songs that everyone plays just a little differently. And the SRV version is my favourite.

Neither do I, but I'm learning the SRV version right now (which is also my favorite). But I do add some of Jimi's techniques in there, and a Leslie (OK, it's a phaser, but it'll do for now)

Re: Jimi Hendrix: Little Wing

I've been working on the intros to "Little Wing" & "Castles Made of Sand" the last 10 days.

Re: Jimi Hendrix: Little Wing

I play it my own way. I don't like trying to cop someone's licks exactly, I did too much of that in the old cover band days. Now, I just try to go for the feeling and vibe of the song. I get compliments on it, so it must be OK ;)

Two of my favorites Gary! Good call...

I do like to work out some things exactly...there's alot to learn from Hendrix and "doing my own thing" wouldn't have allowed me to learn all those cool r&b pull offs and chord fills Hendrix does so beautifully.

His rythym playing is also lead playing...whereas most of us tend to play either rythym or lead, Hendrix did both at the same time.

That's the African thing I guess...so much rythym in Jimi's playing...even in his vocals!

I played the Jimi Hendrix version for years, then the SRV version came out and totally F()CK me up.

Now I play my version which is a mixture of both versions.

Like Jimi, I play it different each and every time I play it...

Tuned down 1/2 step of course and hooking with the thumb.

Re: Jimi Hendrix: Little Wing

Lew, if you like Hendrix work on these songs...

Axis, Bold as Love
3rd Stone from the Sun
Manic Depression
Wind, crys Mary

and of course, Red House.

Re: Jimi Hendrix: Little Wing

I'm on this "Red House" kick at the moment, been playin it over and over in my car CD player, just about every day for the past week, I just don't get tired of it.

He's just amazing.

exactly .. that simultaneous rhythm and lead thing just blows my mind .. 25+ years in and i can't do either more than passably and those cats do 'em both at the same time back and forth seamlessly AND sing at the same time very soulfully too!! ... i wish i could make the time to do that intensive note-for-note study to cop some of the tricks to enable that and work it into 'my thing' from time to time

I told a buddy of mine that it had taken several hours to work it out but that finally, after 35 years, I'd figured out Little Wing note for note. He said he could play it note for note and he stopped by the shop today so I asked him to play it for me. He wasn't even close on most of it! :)

Alot of that r & b thing with the pull offs and partial chords is so subtle and hard to hear that it really took me alot of time to get it worked out. So much of it is the feel too...and it's faster than I remember it being. Alot of forward motion.

In my buddy's case, I think he just got impatient and started filling in the spaces with his own licks while he was teaching it to himself. Which is fine...whatever we play we have to make it our own.

But the hard work I put into this thing was really time well spent...I'm glad I took the time to work it out as closely to Jimi's version as possible.

What a genius. There's a few reasons why he's my favorite guitarist of all time (along with Jeff Beck).

And that way he combines rythym and lead is one of the biggest reasons!

I've always loved r & b guitar...that Curtis Mayfield, Rainy Night In Georgia kind of double stop stuff with the little trills and pull offs.

That's my Detroit side showing I guess...that's where I lived the first 25 years or so of my life: Motown.

I believe Jimi credited Curtis Mayfield with influencing his rhythm playing.

Re: Jimi Hendrix: Little Wing

I didn't know this until i got the tab book for "Axis" recently, but all of the songs on that record were played with that 1/2 step dropped tuning. If nothing else, that would make singing a little easier. Have you guys heard John Mayer's version of "Wait Until Tomorrow"? Not too shabby. Personally, I want to learn "Spanish Castle Magic":bigthumb:

There ya go...Curtis was so great. People Get Ready is one of my favorite tunes. He played in open tuning. Lew

Re: Jimi Hendrix: Little Wing

One of my favorite things about Jimi was his rhythm playing. He could solo like no one else and do it for days, but damn, his delicate but powerful voicings just keep you at attention. I have no clue how he could play like that AND sing at the same time....just wow. When I do 'Little Wing,' my eyes are freakin glued to the fretboard. 'Angel' is like that, too - another one of my absolute favorite songs, ever.

I dig SRV's version, but it just doesn't speak the same way to me.

Re: Jimi Hendrix: Little Wing

Hmmm, I am trying to figure why I'd want to use my thumb on a wraparound but everybody figures things different I guess? I play the C & D barred at the end of the intro. I try and stay as close to Jimi as I can.

YUP! They played together on the Chit'in circuit.

That's awesome . . . I've been a huge Mayfield fan for ages, but I never knew that he played with Hendrix . . . small world musically I guess . . .
