Jimmie Page on Whole Lotta Love

Is that Big Muff Style fuzz on the main riff for Whole Lotta Love? How generate JP the cool vibe on that song? Was he using the black tele on that one?

That's one of the all-time best fuzz songs, IMHO.

Re: Jimmie Page on Whole Lotta Love

He used to use a tiny Supro amp... that had a lot to do with the tone he got, especially when he was playing a Tele.

Re: Jimmie Page on Whole Lotta Love

well Page has said in many interviews by the time Whole Lotta Love was recorded he used Marshalls for the rythym and the Supro combo for solos... he also had the Les Paul by LZ II

Re: Jimmie Page on Whole Lotta Love

Also IIRC they were recording at Headley Grange by then. That killer echo you hear is mic placement and the natural echo from the large stairway area where they setup to record. Thats also where the huge drum sound from songs such as When the Levee Breaks where recorded.

Also the Supro was a Thunderbolt from what I have always read. i don't know the wattage, but it had a 15" speaker.

Anyways Page rules!!!

Re: Jimmie Page on Whole Lotta Love

as far as fuzz, didnt jimmy use a sola sound most of the time?

Re: Jimmie Page on Whole Lotta Love

Listen to how clean that is. There's no fuzz on there at all. That's just a Les Paul (with both pickups on) and a Marshall through a 4x12.

The brilliance of so much of the LZ stuff is that it is so ungainly clean- because of the riffs and the songs, your mind dirties them up.

Most of the first album was done with the Telecaster, Supro and Sola Sound Tone Bender.

Here's another nifty, overlooked piece:

In the main intro piece, the guitar. I hear something fuzzy. You don't hear any fuzz? It must ear drum breakup that I'm hearing...;)

Re: Jimmie Page on Whole Lotta Love

I've got a 77 Guitar Player magazine where Page says he and John Paul Jones used Marshall stacks and Plant stood in the middle of the room and sung with an SM-58 to record that album--all at once! I guess they didn't care about bleed, lol. He says he used the Les Paul as well. He made no mention of fuzz, but again he played with a lot less distortion than people think. To me, Whole Lotta Love is a slightly overdriven, REALLY loud guitar. I don't really hear fuzz on the main riff. Natural distorion, yes. Don't forget, JPJ had some of the most incredibly full bass tones I've ever heard. He's a tone FREAK. He's interviewed in that mag as well.

Re: Jimmie Page on Whole Lotta Love

Yep, I also remember reading where Page said on "Whole Lotta Love" the rhythm guitar was just his LP thru his Marshall. When asked how loud his amp was he said "oh, it was healthy!"

I am really enjoying listening to Jimmy Page more then ever lately. I just can't seem to get enough of the live stuff lately.

Really!

I hear amp/speaker breakup, but not "fuzz" in terms of any effect.

I've got a 77 Guitar Player magazine .

From that interview (in 1977...)

g.p.:what is the amplifier setup you're
using now?

j.p.:onstage? marshall 100s which are
customized in new york so they've got 200 watts.
i've got four unstacked cabinets, and i've got a
wah-wah pedal and an mxr unit. everything else is
total flash (laughs). i've got a harmonizer, a
theramin, violin bow, and an echoplex echo unit.

+1. It's just a little amp grinding away at full power.

Neil Young's lead playing on Mr. Soul is a good example of fuzz tone from that era, if you want a good comparison.

Re: Jimmie Page on Whole Lotta Love

You know, I always thought it was the LP through the Marshall... listening to it now, it actually does sound like an open backed combo- doesn't it?

As I recall, that record was done with pretty much just the live rig, so that would rule out the Supro (but not anything at whatever studio they happened to be at).

Listen to the solo...that HAS to be the Telecaster.....

That's weird....I could have swore the part about the stacks and Plant just singing in the middle of the room was in that article. Maybe it was in the JPJ article? Gosh darn, I know I read it somewhere, lol.
