Jimmy Herring

Re: Jimmy Herring

Yeah, they are some sort of PRS variation on a mini humbucker. His live tone is wonderful.

Re: Jimmy Herring

Actually, wiki goes into quite a bit of detail. Even I, the Tech Wreck, found it interesting. Originally an Epi concept.

Re: Jimmy Herring

There are tons of videos of Jimmy himself going into great detail about his gear. Head over to YouTube and start looking.

Also, check out Jude Gold's podcast No Guitar is Safe. If you're unfamiliar with Jude, he's worked at Guitar Player for something like 15 years, and his podcast is like a live action version of a GP interview. There's lots of talk, and lots of killer playing. He did an episode with Jimmy Herring awhile back that's a must listen for fans.

Re: Jimmy Herring

Thanks! I am new to this guy (thanks Mincer!). Mentioned it to friend who saw the posts, and he considers Herring one of the best guitarists alive. I will watch all that stuff. Take me a while, but I will!

Re: Jimmy Herring

jimmy is a beast. he got amazing tone from a 90's strat with a pair of duncan 59's for years. hes not as gear heady/knowledgeable as some think he is but he knows what sounds he likes

Re: Jimmy Herring

I didn't know much about him for the longest time. I dug the Aquarium Rescue Unit. I dug his work in the Allmans. I saw him live with John McLaughlin (huge Johnny Mac fan here), and instantly was a huge fan. Such beautiful, dynamic tone.

Re: Jimmy Herring

he uses lollars in some guitars but hes been using prs with their own pups a lot too, the nf3 for example. for years his main guitar was a fender strat with a pair of 59's, two volumes and master tone. sounded fantastic. still sounds fantastic regardless of what he uses

Definitely one of the best examples of the player transcending the gear. If I wasn’t watching, I probably wouldn’t be able to tell which one he was using. Michael Landau and Eric Johnson are like that. I heard Scott Henderson say he was listening to Landau, jealous of his perfect Strat tone. Turned out to be a Les Paul.

Re: Jimmy Herring

HA! thats great. i got to see the ringers a few times and that was such an amazing line up. landau's tone was amazing every time
