Jimmy Page & Gibson 500T

What's the relationship between Jimmy Page and the Gibson 500T? I can't imagine getting good Page tones using this pickup. I tried many times, and in my opinion, it's awesome for hard rock/metal, but not blues/rock.
By the way, I really like the 496R

Re: Jimmy Page & Gibson 500T

There is none. I can't imagine why Gibson put the 500T/496R in the JP LP.

Maybe they wanted a hotter pickup for the split positions.

Re: Jimmy Page & Gibson 500T

The newer JP model doesn't have 500T/496R. Not sure what the pu's are but they are definitely more vintage flavor.

Re: Jimmy Page & Gibson 500T

The Jimmy Page signature Les Paul has "Jimmy Page Custom Burstbuckers," dont ask me how they sound. It also has a Page Burst color which is like a faded cherry burst (combination of iced tea and washed cherry).

Re: Jimmy Page & Gibson 500T

How many years has it been since Page has played guitar or recorded? My guess is about 15 years now.

Re: Jimmy Page & Gibson 500T

Jimmy toured/performed with the Black Crowes as his backup band a few years ago.

Re: Jimmy Page & Gibson 500T

That performance kicked ass... one of my favourite bands at the time, plus my hero...

Re: Jimmy Page & Gibson 500T

He toured with Robert Plant a few years ago. I saw him playing a PRS McCarty with the most insane flame top I've ever seen.

Yep a few years ago... here's a video posted over at the LP Forum from a Black Crowes & Page apperance.

Thanks for the link bud,
IMHO, it is sad to see Page trying to recapture the Magic he and with Plant, Bonham and Jones with that bar band Black Crows and their second rate Plant Clone singer. Hopefully Page will get off his ass and put a new band together that really kicks ass! :smokin:

Re: Jimmy Page & Gibson 500T

I remember asking this years ago with no definitive answers. I couldn't fathom Jimmy Page ever playing something like a 500T as that's predominantly a metal pickup, and we all know Page doesn't have metal tone. Worse yet it was featured on his signature series.

At about the same time, am I crazy or did the Joe Perry signature LP also have a 500T in the bridge?

Definately some weird things going on with Gibson at that time. That's right about when they issued the Les Paul Classic with a 500T which made no sense. A 1960 "Classic" with a pickup that didn't exist in the 60's WTF????

Re: Jimmy Page & Gibson 500T

Page needs a 500T like a bicycle needs a lesbian. Wait- Like a fish needs a JB. No, that's not it either. Let me go work on that....

Re: Jimmy Page & Gibson 500T

While it's no PAF, if you wind a 500T low in the ring, its not nearly as harsh/metal-like and it sounds good split in the middle position..pretty "since I've been lovin you"-ish. Up close to the strings its just not a very nice sounding pickup at all.

I still think it matches up best in an all mahogany guitar tho.

:endtangent: :D

Re: Jimmy Page & Gibson 500T

Seymour Duncan custom wound Page's pickups then and sells a Page spec set of humbuckers now. The new Page LPs have Page Burstbuckers installed but are not available for sale separately from Gibson. You can read my guide on the subject if you Google Jimmy Page Signature Les Paul Pre-Buying Information. Good luck, William

Re: Jimmy Page & Gibson 500T

"Dunlop makes Page pickups at their Custom Shop for around $300"

Huh? Dunlop makes pickups?
I mistyped. Dunlop does not make pickups as I wrote in my guide. I meant Seymour Duncan but apparantly had Dunlop on the brain. I stand corrected. Thanks. William

I found this to be true when I had a 500T on my Les Paul Custom for a while. However, I was still getting some mud. Switched to an alnico model pickup and this was better for me.

Now, I seem to have better luck nailing Page tones on my Les Paul Special, which is fitted with a bridge Duncan SP90-3, a ceramic model. "Whole Lotta Love," "Dazed and Confused" and "Out on the Tiles" really call for this sound. And yet, I know there's no way all three of those were recorded with the same guitar and amp.

Re: Jimmy Page & Gibson 500T

I just put some of Gibson's new Burstbucker Pro's in my Les Paul. Talk about Page tone...my goodness, they got it right with these pickups. I love a lot of Duncans and own several, but I must say the Burstbucker Pro's (Alnico 5) nail many Page tones very well indeed. Cheers!

Re: Jimmy Page & Gibson 500T

In my Classics, I moved away from the 496R/500T set to a set of Antiquitys and a set of the MF 50th Anniversary Seths with excellent results through my Mesa amps.

The 496R/500T set though is a good set to use if you are using a high-powered non-MV amp like a vintage Twin or Plexi Marshall. They really make those amps sing.

With my Mesas, I don't need a high output pickup, and I'm very happy with the Duncans I've chosen.
