Jimmy Page Telecaster pickups

For the 20 year's that I've played guitar I never had anything other than Gibson's. So I know a little bit about humbuckers. But I just bought my first fender, a 2012 tele. Well I seen a guy the other day on YouTube playing a tele with Bare Knuckles "The Yardbirds" pickups and I thought they sounded awesome. He said they had Alnico 4 magnets. I've always read that Page's dragoncaster had Alnico 5 magnets. I know we talk a lot about humbuckers on here, but just wanting to see if anyone on here knows anything about them. Thanks

Re: Jimmy Page Telecaster pickups

A lot of the aspects of old pickups are different to what is available now. So quite often winders have to change the tech specs to reach the tonal goals.

Re: Jimmy Page Telecaster pickups

Well, I know his signature Tele will be released in 2019- you can wait and see what kinds of pickups are in it.

Re: Jimmy Page Telecaster pickups

the pups in that tele were a5 for sure. get a good late 50's type tele pup on a top loader rw board tele into the right amp and thats it

Re: Jimmy Page Telecaster pickups

I thought the Duncan STL-1 was instant led zeppelin which surprised me cuz at the time I didn't know tele was so prominent on the recordings.
The fender '58 tele pickup does it well too. Both are a5.

What would they sound like with a basswood tele body?

Hard to generalize... I'm hesitant these days to offer suggestions based on body wood cuz I haven't heard your particular guitar nor had these pickups in more than a couple guitars but if I had to take a guess
More mids with basswood, less strength and percussive sound to the bass strings and less airy upper frequencies.
Would probably be fine I think.

people been trying to sound like Page since he was doing Herman's Hermits sessions with JPJ...if you were impressed by the bare knuckles then give them a go and forget about all the minutiae...it will just carry you further from your goal....

He's right don't get too caught up chasing the exact sounds...
His sound is as much if not more recording technique and playing style as it is guitars and pickups and amps. Just get in the ballpark and focus on the notes, I used to use my strat all the time for Zeppelin when I didn't have a tele around and it still does a good job.
But yeah... Most traditionally styled low output alnico 5 or alnico 3 pickups should give you a great baseline.

This. Personally, I think the Yardbirds sound fantastic and would definitely suit what you're trying to do and more. Don't get too caught up in the details; the only thing that matters is if it sounds good to you.
