Jimmy page wiring

I have seen heaps of threads on the actual wiring, but couldn't find any about the actual results.

Who here has put the Jimmy Page wiring into their guitar? Is it worth it?

I have an Epi Dot, it is wired so that I can split both the neck and bridge pups, and wondering if it would be worth upgrading to the JP wiring? I need to rewire it anyway and was considering just buying a prewired harness off Ebay and being done with it. Am also thinking of replace the bridge custom custom with a pearly gates. I have a PG in the neck and I like it.

Is it that versatile? do I need the ability to put pickups in series, out of phase etc?

Would love to hear peoples opinions if they have done it.

As always, thanks for the help

Re: Jimmy page wiring

I have an Lp copy with a Pearly Gates set and it works great. But I went with george lynch wiring and kept it looking stock.Coil taps with a treble bleed mod would be very cool.

I have. In an Artcore semi... with a PG bridge. Very nice.

That or look into adding a set of TripleShot rings.

I say do it... I loved the sound in mine.

Pretty much, yea.

Dunno... what do you like playing?
JP found uses for it.
The way I figure it, if I can put the JP mod, relatively easily, into any guitar I have, I will.

Lately, I'm thinking that easiest way is to get a set of Triple Shots and a couple of push/pulls... that way the mod can go into more guitars... not just those with 4 pots.

As always, thanks for the help
Glad to help.

Re: Jimmy page wiring

Technically, all you 'need' is the stock wiring. Some of us like more options, not that we use them constantly, but it's nice to have them available for certain songs. Some guys use one PU all night, ohers like to mix things up.

I put the Jimmy Page system in a couple 335's & LP's. In case anyone tries to terrify you about rewiring an F hole guitar, let alone with push-pulls, it's not hard to do if you put a little thought into (most guys don't). Let me know if you need some tips on that.

Re: Jimmy page wiring

I had the JP wiring in my Warmoth LP. It's cool, but I found that I don't really use that many tones, even with the option to do so.

Re: Jimmy page wiring

it's definitely a cool "option", but to be honest i hardly ever use anything but coil cut once in a while. both coils cut in series is cool too, but i've got a coil swap switch for that which in a way eliminates that.

Re: Jimmy page wiring

The only George Lynch wiring I'm aware of is using a push-pull as a pickup selector, for an even more minimal look.

I'm really glad I did my Epi LP with the Jimmy Page wiring. I use the Coil Splits all the time. Phase and Series/Parallel no so much, but still nice to have. When I use them it's usually with both pickups split, Series, Out of Phase for a Brian May type lead tone. I will tell you, I use the Split Neck all the time. Check out the January Riff-Off Round 5 entry I did. (I was Stockholm Syndrome) It really sounds quite Stratty.

Eventually I'd like to record clean and dirty clips for all 20 options. Some are quite similar, but there are ones are are unique and useful.

Re: Jimmy page wiring

Yup, got the JP wiring in my LP Standard. Cool stuff, but like GoDrex, I don't find myself using it all that often.

+1. In the JP system, the options I like best are the coil cuts, the PU's out-of-phase & linked in series (volume boost), and the PU's linked in series with the neck in coil cut & the bridge in HB mode (powerful, but not too dark). These are the most useful to me.

Installing this system with push-pulls means the appearance of the guitar is unchanged. You have the options when you want them; if you don't, the controls work as they normally would, the guitar looks the same, and the cost is minimal. This isn't something that requires a lot of soul-searching. Try it, you just might like having the versatility.

Re: Jimmy page wiring

I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a JP wiring or something similar. I play a Schecter s-1 elite and have just installed the Seymour Duncan Hotrodded set (sh-4;sh-2n). My guitar comes stock with a push/pull in the tone position for coil tap, but I was wanting to do something similar to a jimmy page wiring (at least as close as i can get). The only problem is my guitar only has 3 pots and a pickup selector switch.

I'll be buying all new pots here soon, and all push/pull. Does anyone know how i can mod that to get as close to the jp style as possible?

You can always wire one switch to coil cut both pickups at the same time and then have the other two do phase and pickup series/parallel.
Or if you need coil cuts for each pickup individually, decide if you actually use phase or pickup series/parallel (it's up to you) and only put that one in the last switch.

OR you can get a set of Triple Shot pickup rings which will do the coil cut/series/parallel(you get an extra setting) for each pickup and then you can add phase and pickup series/parallel *plus* something else with the 3 push/pulls.... maybe a kill switch or a volume/tone bypass...

Either way, good luck.

Re: Jimmy page wiring

I wired my Epi Firebird with PG's and JP wiring. More options than the Commodities Futures Trading Board.

Re: Jimmy page wiring

Thanks,
I think I'll give it a go. Does anyone know whether I need short or long shaft pots?

A company called Hoagland brothers have them for sale on the bay. Has anyone bought from these guys?

Re: Jimmy page wiring

short shafts. if you're using the stock holes, you need metric pots. if you want 3/8"(US sized) pots, you need to widen them. i've always had better experience with 3/8" pots as far as taper goes, even between the same brand which is alpha fwiw.
