JJ ECC 83 MG preamp tube

Hey I was wondering if anybody has ever used this tube in there high gain amp to calm it down a bit??? I heard they are like lower gain than the ECC83-S but not as low as a 5751 tube. I was just curious of their tonal sound also? Thanks

Re: JJ ECC 83 MG preamp tube

I use on in the V1 position of my Picovalve. That disclaimer noted, I like it a lot. I still use a JJ's full power 12AX7 in the V2 spot. But it seems to tame the fizzy while keeping the sizzle, if that makes sense.

Yes it does I love it been using one in my Marshall DSL40CST and it does the same to mine tones down the fizzy gain and makes the gain more usuable. I actually have a nice set up of tubes now in that amp and it made it much warmer and not so trebly.I have a JJ3CC83 MID GAIN in V-1/V-2/3 I use a RUBY 7025SSHG and in V-4 my PI I use a Sovtek 12ax7LPS.Great tone now!!! I might try a 5751 next in v-1 just to see how that sounds. Its a JJ 5751 coming soon.

Re: JJ ECC 83 MG preamp tube

I found the tube to be like any average sounding tube. Comparing them to the 83S is hard because tone wise they are the same, except the S has that bacon sizzle topend thats unique to it.

Re: JJ ECC 83 MG preamp tube

I've been wanting to try those as well. Has anybody compared them to Shuguang C9's?

I like the reliability and low noise of the ECC83S's I've had, but I much prefer the tone of the Shuguangs. Is the MG a bit less dull and low-mid-focused than the 83S?

Re: JJ ECC 83 MG preamp tube

yes this tube sounds better IMO than the 83s.It is defintely less dull sounding and does want to get that Midrange up in there a bit more to my ears. Try it you will like it. I used it in V-1 spot in my Marshall and it sounds great!! Also, try the JJ 5751 its lower gain than the MID GAIN at 70% but it really tames the gain down on my amp and makes it more usuable vintage sounding kinda gain. No fizz at all. Both those tubes are great for V-1 spots IMO. The upper end of the MID GAIN isnt as sizzly as the 83s but a smoother high end.
