JJ/Tesla 6L6?

So I've finally given up on the 6550s in the Superdrive 80. The cleans are amazingly (is that a word?) good but the distortion is way too fizzy. Im definitely going back to 6L6s so I need some suggestions. Budda recommends Groove Tubes 6L6-S tubes. Aren't these the same as the JJ/Tesla 6L6? I dont feel like spending more money (Groove) for the same thing (JJ) so can anyone confirm this?

Also how good are these tubes?

Any other recommendations? Sovtek, Svetlana, Tung Sol, ect.

Re: JJ/Tesla 6L6?

so does JJ not test them well enough?

I don't know about that, but I buy my JJ's from Bob over at Eurotubes, and he has great customer service.

BTW, I really dig the JJ 6L6 and 6V6 tubes in my Fender amps. Good luck!

A major +1, goes out of his way. But sometimes rushes his opinion, he was convinced that in Laney Pro-Tubes AOR phase inverters in V3- they are not.

Re: JJ/Tesla 6L6?

So Bob at Eurotubes eh?

I think i'm also going to replace the sovtek 12ax7s from the preamp with jjs. the groove tube 'high gain amp kit' (3 preamp tubes that tested more output? for 80 freakn dollars) is the same thing Bob does with the jj's ($40).

any other opinions about 6l6s, the guy who works at eurotubes, or the preamp tubes?

Re: JJ/Tesla 6L6?

I get mine from Todd @ Revolution Guitar - I get the tubes in 2 days, since he lives an hour over from me. Great guy to deal with, as well!

JJ 6L6's are my favorite powertube, bar none.

Re: JJ/Tesla 6L6?

I swear that Bob doesn't pay me man, it's just that I've used his services a couple of times. I think the JJ's are all around good tubes and if you want I think Bob will sell you a 'matched' set and all (not sure if that makes a big difference to you or not). I redid my Bandmaster with a whole set of JJ's and it sounds great...the JJ 12AX7's sound very good to my ears. Feel free to try the GT's, but you're getting the same thing as JJ's bought from Eurotubes, as Bob will test them prior to selling them.

I hear that Todd is great too, just never had the personal experience. Maybe I'll try him if I'm looking for something different in the future.

do matched preamp tubes really matter that much??

Re: JJ/Tesla 6L6?

Matching is a concern some have re: power tubes. Sometimes, depending on the tone you're looking for, it's desirable to mix different brands of preamp tube (as long as they're approprate tube type for the job). I find the JJ's a little dark, but full, which I like very much. Sometime folks will go with a 'balanced' phase inverter, as well. I don't know the particulars of that amp, but you can find out if it utilizes one from the manufacturer.
