joe bonamassa's new rig

Re: joe bonamassa's new rig

Strangely, to me, that doesn't sound like that much of a change. Just losing delays and reverb mainly, and going to a slightly lower power level. I don't know what the original tweeds sound like exactly, but I've played through a '57 reissue can sound just like a marshall when the treble is slightly dialed back and the bass is rolled off just under a quarter turn on the amp, but it has the benefit of several more sounds available that a marshall can't do by simply pushing either the bass, treble or both to their limits on the amp.

he is running the volume, treble and mids at 10 and bass off. if you run the amp volume up high and turn up the bass it turns to flubby mush. it is still a marshally tone but losing the reverb and delay leaves you pretty naked

Re: joe bonamassa's new rig

Old tweed and NMV Marshalls leave nothing to hide behind, and they really let your playing flaws show through. Nature of the beast.Considering the modern amps he was playing, loss of effects in combo with unforgiving amps is a massive change. Good for him going balls out.

Re: joe bonamassa's new rig

Maybe he is responding to critics who suggest that his sound is too slick/refined. I admire his technique but I think "too slick" is a legitimate criticism of his sound. Also admire that he can branch out and do something different.

I play through a fairly fancy rig and recently, I said Hey I am just gonna run my MXR Distortion III as a boost (distortion at 0, tone noon, level around 2:30) through my old Princeton reverb running at about 5.

Yeah.....IMHO.....the best thing "Joe" could do is throw those damn delay pedals in The Garbage.!
I hate the sound of those things...on EVERY single song.

Re: joe bonamassa's new rig

I don't dig Joe's retro-blues stuff (sadly, it seems like he's headed more that direction at the moment), but the guy is a monster player with monster tone and I'll never understand all the hate he gets on guitar forums. I used to dismiss him as a "poor man's Gary Moore with some Eric Johnson thrown-in". But once I got his acoustic Vienna Opera House DVD my tune changed. I dig his more roots (less blues purist) oriented stuff, as well as the Black Country Communion stuff.

I bought my EBMM Morse Y2D pretty much because of this video.

At any rate... I love that Joe is such a GAS whore that he had to put up one of his three Dumbles up for sale to fund another 'burst LP. Glad to hear that GAS affects even the heavy hitters to the point that they too have to sell some gear to pay for other gear... just on a much larger scale!

Re: joe bonamassa's new rig

I rarely use delay and never use reverb. Glad to see Joe is finally catching up to me :smokin:

Re: joe bonamassa's new rig

Here's his performance at the Notes for Notes concert around eight weeks ago. He was playing his just-acquired '59 burst through a tweed.

The guys he's playing with are members of Conan's Basic Cable Band.

Different rig, same guitar face.

Re: joe bonamassa's new rig

Saw JB in Greenbay, WI in 2003, where he opened for KWS and stole the show, big time.

KWS got into JB face with accusation that JB stole his spot, JB just told KWS to get up there and play and then got sissy punched in the face by KWS...

Audience watched as JB flicked off KWS with his middle digit finger directly to KWS nose and then walked off the stage to a major applause.

Never liked KWS, his claim that SRV taught him, or his music.

Hey, I give the man props for changing it up. A switch or change sometimes is needed to spark some much needed creativity.

I actually love both KWS and JB. Both for different reasons. I saw KWS 3 years ago, and it was one of the best concerts I've ever seen. He put on an incredible show, and it was great because there wasn't any big introduction or anything. They literally just walked out on stage and started playing, which was cool I thought.

The only thing about JB is that he is overly cocky about his playing. That's why he's only been able to survive in a solo act. He played with Black Country Communion for 3 records and split, and Glen Hughes said his ego was getting out of hand. that being said, JB has every right to be cocky. The guy can play a mean guitar, so I can't blame him, but at the same time, I think he should be more humble, rather than cocky, and respect other players. Taking shots at other players is not a good way to make it in the business.

That song from the beacon sounds like a blues lawyer's version of Pantera's I'm broken... Just a lil' at the beginning lol.
