Joe Perry Pups

Hi i am looking for a set of seymour duncans for my les paul and was wondering if people could tell me what would be best for his sound off of the 70s album, specifically the Live Bootleg album.

It says he uses Jb, Full Shred and The seth lovers, but any tips on what would be the best for that sound and the tonal qualities of these pickups would be greatly appreciated.

Joe's gear list is as long as my...leg! He uses a Bil Lawrence in the neck position of a Telecaster or 2...it all varies, Joe uses what ever will get him the tonew he is looking for! I wolud say a Set of Seths, the truth is, Joe has so many damn guitars that it's hard to tell...His older signature models had a Classic 57 in the neck and a Joe Perry Custom Wound bucker in the bridge, his new Signature pauls have BB 2's and 3's in them. I would say anything that's a PAF type pickup...Seths, 59's, PG's, Antiquitys, etc...

I have a set of seths in my les paul and they have a warm classic rock sound , in one word awsome!!

would a JB Bridge and Full shred neck be a good combo? And wouldnt the full shred be more of a metal type pickup?

That combo will take you far from the vintage 70's tone and will move you directly to the 80's shredding. I think a vintage set will please you more if you are triying to get that vintage rock tone.

Not necessarily with the Full Shred bridge ...

I can get 'hot' vintage style tones using the Full Shred bridge with the right amp/settings. The amp settings have a greater role in determining whether you sound like 70's Rock or 80's shred moreso than the pickups you use.

I can tell you right now my tone is FAR from 80's shred.

In regards to Perry's early tones, I associate that tone with the L500 which is closer IMHO and experience to the JB (and to a lesser extent the Full Shred ... but Theodie know more than I on comparing the L500 to Duncans) ... for Perry's current sound I would be looking at the Seth's ... just my .02

Yes you can use a JB in the neck, but I don't think it would be what you are looking for. It usually has to be set very low to balance all but the hottest bridge pickup and gives a chimy strat like tone when split, but is a bit "plummy" for rythm work in HB mode, but the lead sound is luurvly split and HB in LP type guitars.

I HAD A Les paul epiphone JOE perry A long time ago.
and it had OBL twin Blade full size humbucker
they had too much output, too much bass and too much middles. no highs enough to balance with other frequencies.
