Joe Satriani rig rundown

Re: Joe Satriani rig rundown

From everything he said about the JVM, I agree with his changes. I'll bet a Satriani JVM will transform that amp from good to great.

Re: Joe Satriani rig rundown

The stock JVM is a pretty smokin' amp, but I would think that those changes would be a cool improvements also. It would put that amp on par with the other big dog channel switchers.

Re: Joe Satriani rig rundown

That's the first time in my life I've ever heard a chick say "What tubes are in those?". It kind of turned me on.

Re: Joe Satriani rig rundown

As a 410 owner those settings on channel 3 were kinda scary. He's moving some air there!

Re: Joe Satriani rig rundown

Why in the world did he go to Marshall? Better royalties? It's all snake oil. Their amps are no better than 26745827345098247 amp makers today. It's just a name and a prestige thing.

I recognize the rhetorical question, but the literal answer is he was dissatisfied with Peavey -- sounds like they had a falling out over specs and timelines on the JSX50 (aka Butcher).

Joe's product lines tend to be with recognized-but-not-boutique builders (Vox, Ibanez, Peavey); the endorsed equipment usually ends up in the upper-middle class of effects, guitars, etc. And with a few notable exceptions (JS100, Mini Collosal), they usually a great price:value ratio. So Marshall seems a natural fit to me.

Just my .02 of musings, of course. I'll be interested to see what comes out of this, even as I shop for a JSX.

Yeah, I figured as much. As for his (and most other stars') tendencies towards big, corporate companies, that's just dollars and cents. He could get awesome tone if he used GFS pickups in Jet City amps.

he said sammy and him were jammin on some marshalls and he was really digging the tones he was getting and the fact that peavey was dragging their feet..he also said he preferred the passive tone controls over the active tone controls on the JSX...

Re: Joe Satriani rig rundown

i was looking at the JVM but even used they were out of my price range...

Re: Joe Satriani rig rundown

Marshall famously has never paid for artist endorsements, and I don't think that has changed. I know artist got a royalty cut off signature gear, but that is it as far as I know.

If I remember correctly, even Paul Gilbert bought his first Vintage Modern.

Re: Joe Satriani rig rundown

Cool!

I thought it was cool that he has a boatload of pedals and only uses them for small parts in a few songs.

Re: Joe Satriani rig rundown

Marshall has never given away an amp...ever...even Jimi Hendrix paid for all his Marshalls.

They do have an artist program and signature amps are part of that but even players that have signature amps pay for the amps.

Why did Satch go to Marshall...maybe because he played Marshalls for 20+ years before PV...

Maybe because THEY ARE MARSHALL ands build some of the GREATEST sounding amps EVER...

Maybe becuase he's JOE FREAKING SATRIANI...

Re: Joe Satriani rig rundown

I don't know about the amps, but that light blue JS with singles was sexy!

Maybe because they have been making amps long before any of these new socalled "better" amps came around!!
It is like all other gadgets for people today....me wantsess new new new;)

Re: Joe Satriani rig rundown

With Satriani and many artists, they rarely use stock gear, their amps and effects are modified, people like Robert Keely have been modifying their effects for years. Satriani has said he was close to starting his own guitar effect and amp company, since he's very hands on he realized the business end would take too much of his time, so he went wiTh Vox to design his pedals.

On the amp end, he's always played Marshalls. After the Peavey endorsement, he used Peaveys solo, but used Marshalls with Chickenfoot because he liked the ones Sammy had, (410's) and figured their tone would fit Chickenfoot better than the Peaveys. I don't think the 410s were out when he helped design the JSX, so it could be Marshall just built an amp that sounded better. Satrianis very involved in the designing of the prototypes, so in this case it wasnt about the money, it was about who could make the better sounding amp.

Re: Joe Satriani rig rundown

If I lived in a place that I could realistically crank up a JVM or any Marshall beast for that matter I`d own one but I don`t:sad: Satriani will be in the Bay Area Thursday , I`m so tempted to go hear those JVMs blasting.

I am of the belief that in rock and roll days of yore, people were very limited in what gear they could get and only a few brands made gear. This is why Eddie Van Halen invented the "Superstrat" because he didn't like what was available on the rack. It's also why amp-modding and replacement pickups began to emerge in the 70's. Marshall was popular and got big because they were the only game in town, aside from HiWatt and a couple others, if you were looking for big stacks for big volume. I don't buy the "Marshalls are the best" argument. Nowadays, lots of amazing amps are out there that do whatever you want them to do. Blackstar is one example of jaded former Marshall employees wanting to do things that players want, not just live in the past and rest on the laurels of Hendrix, et al. I've also heard old Marshalls and newer Marshalls that sound like total @$$.

Like I said, Satch could play an Agile into a practice amp and sound amazing.
