John mayer rig?

Re: John mayer rig?

This here is a link to all of John's gear. This may just lead you to the site, not the actual thread. If it does, go to Musician's Forum and then check out the thread that says John's Gear List.

Hope this helps!

John is a great player for sure. The JM sig model is coming out fairly soon I think from Fender.

depends on who you're talking about. The fender engineers intended the amps to stay clean:amps that dirtied up were considered crappy or cheap. Most players consult fender for their top of the line clean tones in amps like the deluxe and the twin. Most people who want a classic rock but harder tone go marshall, but you hate those dudes so what can you do?

Check out duncan amps tools i think it's called. Search it in google. You can download this tone stack EQ generator that shows the differences in marshall, fender, vox, etc tone stacks. Perhaps you can toy around with the fender curves to find a capacitor value that will help you achieve that crunch you want.

well, i just don't like EL's, at all, i'm a 6l6 guy, i like most all amps that have them

and these days, most people buy tube fenders, that aren't twins, to crank them & get good crunch.

i should start a new thread for this

Re: John mayer rig?

perhaps an agressive lower and upper mid preamp stage design would help you get more crunch out of your 6l6's. Just swap capacitor values until you like the curve and perhaps try it out on your bassman.

Re: John mayer rig?

yeah, I'm having a hard time with the entire signature thing. when I pay 3k for an amp, I expect the components to be hand picked, matched up, etc. Then they come out with a "sig" amp that is supposed to be wildly better. I actually refused to even try it. Why develop lust for a 5K amp when the 3K blows your socks off? I did try the same type power tube in my "normal" CR as they put in the "sig" and I found it to be an improvement. part of me recognizes that there is probably an imprrovement somewhere, part of me thinks it's marketing hype.

Re: John mayer rig?

The best crunch out of a Fender is Tweeds. Besides the circuit, the cabinet has a lot to do with the sound. A tweed deluxe or bassman will give up the goods sooner than most blackfaces, which were designed with a less crunchy sound.
