John Oates Hangout --- Come on in!

Re: John Oates Hangout --- Come on in!

what's your comment on the family guy reference to yourself and Hall a couple years ago?

Re: John Oates Hangout --- Come on in!

Out of Touch brings back so many memories- it's one of the top 10 awesome videos of the 80's, maybe one of the first I saw, and I need to crank the song up whenever I hear it. Hall & Oates is one of the best songwriting duos of all time, IMO on the same level with Simon & Garfunkel

Re: John Oates Hangout --- Come on in!

Welcome to the forum, John!!

Question: What inspires you the most to write songs, or what do you find helps get you out of a rut or break a case of writer's block?

Re: John Oates Hangout --- Come on in!

First off, let me say that I mostly listen to the heavier kinds of Rock and Metal, yet, one of my all-time favorites is the already mentioned, Maneater.

So, my question is, what's the story behind the song? Was it just an idea or was there an actual person in mind?

Also, leaving the '58 out, Strat or Tele?

thanks for answering my questions! Look forward to the new CD! Since you are best know for your Pop tunes, will the new disc be more of a showcase of your guitar playing? Best Wishes to you!

Re: John Oates Hangout --- Come on in!

Do you have any advice for aspiring songwriters?

Also, Will & Grace reruns on We TV a few days ago -- the marriage scene with Taye Diggs, lmao!
I've had wedding gigs like that in real life. Everybody drunk and bossy.

Re: John Oates Hangout --- Come on in!

Seriously cool! John, what inspired you to get into music?

Are you really from Gibraltar ? My grandmother was from there and married an English cop that's how I got the name Oates...
I was a musician from birth somehow..I just sang and played from a very early age.

Re: John Oates Hangout --- Come on in!

That stuff don't mean much to me...but when they're talking about you on TV that always gets you attention...hopefully its for the good

I'm originally from the UK, but worked in Gibraltar with the RAF between 2006-09. My old job became available as a civilian post last year and I moved back out there in October. My family will join me in June.

There's a really vibrant little music scene in Gib, you should pop along to one of the jam nights. :D

Re: John Oates Hangout --- Come on in!

hey John,
Hall & Oats made some amazing sounds mixing analog synths & beat boxes with more traditional instruments on songs like One on One and I Can't Go For That.
Do you still own or have interest in those old Roland CR beat boxes and such or was it just where you were at the time?

also
Silly Question: any comment on the fictionalized caricature of you on the internet comedy series Yacht Rock? :D

Re: John Oates Hangout --- Come on in!

I was around in the Eighties, and a big fan. Best memory: Back in the day I was dating a beautiful woman, long blonde hair down past her butt, smart as a whip, and a great sense of humor...what's not to love? Her name was Sara and she was a waitress at the club I was playing. I remember singing in the car with her to "Sara Smile" at the top of our lungs. She got away though, but her kiss is still on my list after all these years. And I think of her just about every time I hear one of those great songs. So, thank you.

I too would like to ask you about songwriting. I keep coming up with great riffs and catchy hooks, but lately I've been having trouble finishing them off and creating a complete song. Has this ever happened to you, and how did you get out of it?

Best wishes,

Bill

Those first comments were awesome Bill. Music has a way of really capturing things like that.

John, thanks for the fantastic comments and the great songs over the years. Hope to catch your new set soon.

Any touring plans? Tampa Bay area in particular? Love to shoot some photos of your guitar to share with the forum faithful. You are probably one of the top reasons I own this Hamer Daytona.

Re: John Oates Hangout --- Come on in!

Work hard, practice harder and listen to the musicians you love.
I work with music students and will pass this one on to them. I've remained a huge fan of yours since the mid 70's and never tire of your playing or your albums - "CD's" now.
She's Gone and Rich Girl just two of the very many that gave some real music to those of us finishing school in the 70's! DO YOU HAVE ONE OR TWO OF YOUR SONGS OVERALL THAT YOU PREFER (MAYBE) OVER THE REST....AND WHY?

Re: John Oates Hangout --- Come on in!

John, if you have a moment share what went into Sara Smile and how it all came about (the real story). Iconic song...some of the greatest times. Thanks!
