johnny winter tone

Re: johnny winter tone

something bright without too much output. most of johnnys classic stuff is with a firebird. i think a sh2 jazz set would actually do quite nicely, especially if you have the right amp.

Re: johnny winter tone

Classic Johnny Winter tone would be from Mini Humbuckers in his Firebird. Mini Buckers have a sound of their own.(Kinda like fat angry single coil) If your looking to stay with a Full sized Bucker? IMO a Pearly Gates would at least be a upgrade in your Epi LP, And get you much closer to JW's tone.:)

And the right amp settings: no bass, no middle, full treble, full volume.

Re: johnny winter tone

I just remembered... The StagMag will give you bright single coil tone in a Humbucker. ;)

What Jeremy said +1!

Re: johnny winter tone

I'm pretty sure I read an interview with Johnny years ago, where indicated that he rolled back the bass and kept the treble full up. Probably rolled off the mids as well.

Re: johnny winter tone

Johnny Winter brings back some fond memories of some good blues music.
The tone & speed he has on Be Careful With a Fool is just outstanding.

Re: johnny winter tone

I'd go with Jeremy's suggestion of a pair of Jazz pickups. I'd also recommend setting them flush with the rings to get some more air and chime.

Re: johnny winter tone

He sounds like the 59

Yes, he has said he LOVES Music Man amps, he dimes everything and rolls off the bass.

Good thing he uses Duncans, otherwise he would have no tone. (sarcasm)

Re: johnny winter tone

Johnny Winter blew me away the first time I saw him...and the second time...and the third...

He mostly used an Erlewine Lazer model guitar, which is a headless, Steinbergeresque looking thing. The lazer has a single coil at the neck and a humbucker at the bridge. As far as I know, Erlewine winds their own. He also played a Firebird. The guy has T-O-N-E!!!

I remember he had a bass player who played bass and harmonica at the same time...and played 'em well.

For what you're trying to accomplish, I'd go for a Pearly Gates at the bridge and maybe an Alnico Pro II at the neck.

I saw him in Germay two months ago. Great concert.
He is still a great player, fast and groovey. He played the Firebird on the last 4 songs. It seem to be too big and heavy for him since he seem to be physical weak. The main guitar was the mentionend white headless Lazer.
