Jolly's "Shower of Sparks"

Ok, I'm not sure anyone but mr J, or anyone who's heard his playing knows what i'm talking about... but honestly, man, how do you pull off those prickly, sparkly harmonics like that? !!!!! I think you referred to them as "cascading" once.

simple.... jolly is the God of Pinch Harmonics :saeek:

Re: Jolly's "Shower of Sparks"

Shower of sparks....I like that term.:) I've actuaLLY never even had a term for them. I believe it was Jammer Matt that referred to them as cascading harmonics and it just kinda sounded appropriate.

Anyways, the best place to do it on is on the G string. Here's how I do it. I hammer off from the 4th fret to the 2nd fret then to the open G. You just keep doing this repeatedly and rather fast as well. As you're doing that you take the side of your picking hand (starting right over the bridge pickup) and bring it towards the nut as you're lightly touching the strings.......and there ya have it. Hopefully that made sense.:)

lol.....thanks Cory:)

Re: Jolly's "Shower of Sparks"

I dont know how common that technique is. I learned how to do when I saw someone do it onstage.
Then you kinda notice it when you here it alot more.

I think Vito Bratta used that technique alot.

Either way its very cool. And can sound impressive!!!

I stole/borrowed it from Eddie Van Halen....lol

Re: Jolly's "Shower of Sparks"

To do it, use a decent amount of distortion and hit the string so your pick and your thumb hit it. It's kind of a subconscious thing to me, (yes, I have control over whether it's a pinch harmonic or not) but I think that's how you can get it to happen.

BTW, Jolly, have you seen my signiture? :newangel:

Re: Jolly's "Shower of Sparks"

Normal pinch harmonics have become second nature for me, but that "Shower of Sparks" thing is news to me. I tried it today. Hammer on and off between the 12 and 14 fret on the G string, while sliding a right-hand finger from the bridge pick-up towards the neck, resting gently on the string.

Re: Jolly's "Shower of Sparks"

Jolly, Now you've got me thinkin... What songs does Eddie do this in???

Somebody Get Me A Doctor off of Van Halen II. He does it right after the solo.

Re: Jolly's "Shower of Sparks"

Yeah, cascading harmonics. Me and Eddie were sittin' around having a beer back in the day, and I said, "hey Ed," cause that's his name, I said, "hey Ed, what is that little trick you do that sounds like tinkling on a tin roof?" And he said, "that's what I call cascading harmonics."

And if you believe that one...... I got a few bridges for sale.

I've tried it about a dozen times, and managed to pull it off like once so far. Jolly is the god of cascading harmonics!!

Re: Jolly's "Shower of Sparks"

Ok, I'm a retard. I just ran into my room to see if I could pull of that technique with my tongue. I don't recommend it unless you want saliva on your Duncans. LOL

Re: Jolly's "Shower of Sparks"

If you could pull that one off, your woman would never let you leave the room!! That's what you call a shower of a completely different magnitude :saeek:

Insteand of "Cascading Harmonics," I suppose you'd call that one "Cunnilingal Harmony!" :laugh2: :banned:

Yeah, this is gonna take some practice (and some good, tasteful placement so that I don't sound like I'm ripping anyone off!), but I get what'cher sayin'. Thanks for sharing!
