Josie - Steely Dan

I'm working on few demos for our new cover band with our keyboard player.
The idea is to home record the whole thing, because we don't want to waste money on a recording studio.
Bar owners are half deaf anyway! :-))

We just layed down the basic keyboard and guitar tracks and the drums were played manually on a midi controller.
We still need to record vocals and bass guitar and mix the whole thing down a bit better.

Anyway, here's a little bit of a famous Steely Dan track, I used my custom Strat and SD APS-1 pickups.

Man, this is funny. Me and my bass-player friend, (forum newbie Earl Bypass), were just talking about this very song at work today. We both want to try to learn it. Your take is great. Very close to the tone and feel of the original.

The only thing missing is Walter's whaack - whaack on those two sliding bass notes. But I would hardly knock you for that. It is Walter Becker, after all. ;)

Nice licks.

Very fun song and a cool cover. I liked the guitar playing very much. Your sound is convincingly authentic. I actually have a recording of a cover band of mine playing that song also. Unfotunately, they recorded it as a trio, and I came in later with the guitar. So, I didn't get to record solos really besides that harmony thing in the middle.

Thanks guys, I appreciate your comments.

I might do another take before the final mixdown, but I'll decide when I hear the vocals and bass guitar.

Re: Josie - Steely Dan

nice work

watch the 'looseness' the the rhythm section ... there seem to be a coupla spots where it really isnt as tight as it might be .. the pocket gets sloppy when that happens

nice tone on the guitar ... what scalar ideas are you using on the outro solo?

my cover band plays this tune ... its fun to nail all those cool chords instead of the usual simple rock tunes we cover

have fun - thanks for sharing it

Man, this sounds great! The synth brass section drives me batty, but what are ya gonna do, short of hiring a real brass section? :)

A little too much modulation on the lead for my liking, given the electric piano already having that breathy atmosphere to it. The lead tone is great, and that rhythm guitar is so jangly-sweet.

This is one of my favorite Steely Dan tunes, and your take is wonderful. I even love that electric piano run toward the end. Makes me want to be in a Steely Dan tribute band!

Thanks guys!

It's great to know there are so many Dan fans over here.

We'll try and get the recording finished soon (work permitting!) and I'll post the results...I appreciate your suggestions.:bigthumb:
