JSX or 5150mk2 ?

My mate is choosing his amp, and there is like one new 5150 mk2 head left in melbourne new which he can score, or he can go with a JSX.

Now ive been telling him to go the 5150 mk2 for sure because he's got a 5150 cab (not that that really matters) and he really loves metal and loves to have a totally wailing sound! So im pretty sure the 5150 mk2 is for him but i just wanted others opinions on the differences between these two amps.

Cheers :D

PS. Could you, if you wanted to, put el34's into a 5150?

Has he tried the Triple X series? I found them pretty good. JSX isn't bad either - usable clean tone.

I have a block EVH 5150 (from 1991 - one of the first to hit Australia's shores) and I love it...however, its clean leaves much to be desired. Personally I found the 5150 mk2 to be very compressed sounding and less open sounding than the original 5150 series.

Go for the JSX. More versatile...While I love the 5150, it really only has one sound. The JSX kicks alot of ass, as does the XXX. Even though the JSX was designed off of the XXX, they really are pretty different beasts.

Go with the JSX. The original 5150 is better than the Mk I and either way they're both pretty linear in terms of sound versatility. The JSX was made to get a few different sounds and it shines at that.

The Triple XXX has that really cool damping switch and it has one of the best distortions in a mass produced amp on the Crunch channel. The 5150 is a good choice if your into heavy metal, but in my opinion, especially if your a lead player the JSX is one of the best high gain amps in production and the price is outstanding. What the JSX might lack in using really expensive parts and being hand made etc. is made up quite a bit by it being voiced extremely well, its articulation and punch is very impressive and the sound jumps of the strings more than the others. To me the lead channel of the JSX is kinda a less compressed version of the triple xxx's crunch channel.
