after experimenting with different preamp tubes in my new-to-me 2005 JSX, here is the combination i came up with that i love.
it came with JJ 6L6's, and i like those. i may go with KT66's or whatever, but not right now.
i basically ended up with the same combination i liked in my classic 50 and valveking.
V1 - JJ ECC803S (long plate 12AX7)
V2 & V3 - JJ ECC832 (12AU7/12DW7 hybrid) V2 is the gain stage and V3 is for the active EQ(which is AWESOME once you get used to it).
V4 - JJ ECC83s standard 12AX7
with this combo i can actually use the high gain input and turn up the preamps without getting dirty too quickly or gritty/grainy.
the ultra channel has a tight, juicy, punchy, articulate, tone for metal and hard rock. the crunch channel sounds REALLY close to my classic 50 now. really nice and chimey without too much breakup.
