JSX/XXX2 & XXX/3120 users in here!

after experimenting with different preamp tubes in my new-to-me 2005 JSX, here is the combination i came up with that i love.

it came with JJ 6L6's, and i like those. i may go with KT66's or whatever, but not right now.

i basically ended up with the same combination i liked in my classic 50 and valveking.

V1 - JJ ECC803S (long plate 12AX7)
V2 & V3 - JJ ECC832 (12AU7/12DW7 hybrid) V2 is the gain stage and V3 is for the active EQ(which is AWESOME once you get used to it).
V4 - JJ ECC83s standard 12AX7

with this combo i can actually use the high gain input and turn up the preamps without getting dirty too quickly or gritty/grainy.

the ultra channel has a tight, juicy, punchy, articulate, tone for metal and hard rock. the crunch channel sounds REALLY close to my classic 50 now. really nice and chimey without too much breakup.

Yup, I've been running all JJ ECC83S' in my JSX for years. No other tubes sounded or performed better.
I detest Russian tubes in these amps. (except in the PI because the Sovtek LPS works great there)

i tried using all ECC83S's, and it was still too much distortion for me.... although it was still a hell of an improvement over the sovteks it came with.

Yeah, lotsa gain with those tubes.
I run my Ultra channel gain at 5/10.
I run my Crunch gain at 9/10.
No boosts (obviously) & EMG 81.

i use lower output passives into the crunch channel around 3/10 to 6/10 and higher output passives into the ultra channel between 4/10 and 7/10.

since i use the 2 channels for completely different purposes, i run a boost into the effects loop.

speaking of the effects loop, i love the fact that it has in/out volumes and a footswitch. the versatility is awesome.

Yeah, and you can boost those controls and just turn the effects loop on via footswitch for a major or minor volume boost too.
I use my crunch ch for my main heavy rhythm tone. Don't use the clean or ultra much. Used to use the ultra exclusively for years though.
For my mid gain tones, the JVM excels at them. So I'll be using that one for a while I bet.

I have the XXX 2x12 combo, could someone help me determine which preamp slots are v1, v2, v3 and v4? I've googled it but people only demonstrate the head's preamp slots. I'm guessing the 3 next to each other are v1,2 and 3 and the one next to the power tubes is the phase inverter.

I love my xxx with e34l's. I actually wanted it retubed and biased with fresh el34's; that the tech didn't know that e34l's are like holy water on a vampire to old xxx's just makes it a happy accident.

I actually use the combo as a head because it's too heavy and the back doesn't completely close, so I don't care to put new speakers in. My Lopo 2x12 now has Eminence v12's in it, I'm picking it up from the shop Monday. Yay.
