JTM-45 vs Plexi 50 vs Plexi 100

Re: JTM-45 vs Plexi 50 vs Plexi 100

Thanks for the input!
i think maybe the plexi 50w would be the best bet. Because, at this point in my playing 'career', i really only do bedroom stuff!! 50w is way overkill as it is, but i'm kinda used to it because of the bassman. 100w would be just crazy. With either amp an investment in a good attenuator would be mandatory. I know these aren't practical, but amps are very interesting to me, and i'd love to have real vintage marshall tone... and i think that means taking the volume along with it, to a degree.
Do you know anything about the differences in the lead/bass circuits, in regards to either the 100w or 50w?

The lead version has more of an upper midrange spike to it's tone while the bass versions are a tad smoother and less agressive.

FWIW, there is NO attenuator IN THE FREE WORLD that will tame a 20 watt Marshall enough to use in a bedroom much less a 50 watt. I know you have a 50 watt fedner bassman but IMO, a 50 watt amp is simpluy overkill in small clubs much less a bedroom!

There are several 1 to 5 watt amps that are made from the ground up to be played in very small settings and if I were you i'd be look ing at one of those...

yeah i know desire has completely outstripped reason on this idea.....

a 1 to 5 watt amp would be cool, BUT, so would getting to build one of the classic amp circuits myself!! ya know??

I dunno, it'll be a while till i have money for another guitar project, so i have some time to come to my senses still.... ;)

One tonal difference between the plexi and the JTM-45 is the sweet but rowdy upper midrange that the JTM-45 has. It's smooth but still sassy at the same time. Perfect for bluesy stuff. Plexi's are more gritty sounding in this register. Not bad sounding at all, just more aggressive and gritty as can be. That's one easy way to tell them apart sonically. They are both expressive and are smooth in their own ways, but the JTM-45 has a very distinctive female-voiced upper midrange that no other marshall has.
