Jtm30 in the shop

No it didn't overheat. Tubes are original and wanted it checked out to make sure it's operating at 100 percent. Also the treble knob was acting funny.

Please hold your applause.

Now for the neat part - its in the hands of andy brauer, who wrote about it as a sleeper amp in vintage guitar mag.

Re: Jtm30 in the shop

Andy Brauer, brother of Gary Brauer? Very nice. I've heard nothing but great things about him and if anything needs his attention he'll make it perfect.

Re: Jtm30 in the shop

Not sure about Gary but Andy's apparently a notable tech in this region. Kind of a coincidence it ended up there.

Re: Jtm30 in the shop

Hehe, probably, but I liked his idea - if the tubes are strong and not running too hot, just leave things alone in that department. But if the tubes need replacing I think he mentioned just changing a resistor to match, maybe it's easier on this amp to do it like that, not sure. I didn't want to go to crazy with mods until I know if all is running ok.

[ugh, I just saw one for hella cheaper in local CL right now than I paid - RATS! I should have stuck with my patented "Rule of $300"]

Andy Brauer.....total blast from the past......cool
He is a gear nut from olden days...when racks ruled, and big setups was the thing....
Today it is just big stoopid pedal boards with29364546372827464646 delays and such in them;)
Should in very good hands.

Re: Jtm30 in the shop

It's always best to get them checked out by a pro.

If we were in the same town I'd have sought you out! I had a guy in Atlanta all dialed in - older ex TV repairman that seemed to fix stuff for fun. I have a feeling the cost will be a bit higher in LA-LA land.

Re: Jtm30 in the shop

cool little backstory about bogner working for brauer:

http://guitarinternational.com/2010/08/13/the-amp-wizards-bogner-rivera-soldano-and-arredondo/

"Then Bogner read about Andy Brauer, who rented boutique gear to every hot guitarist under the sun. So with a Marshall he modified under his arm, and about $600 in his pockets, Reinhold headed out to Los Angeles in 1989, hoping Brauer would give him a job. “For some reason, I just knew it would work out,” Bogner recalls. Once Brauer heard Bogner’s Marshall, he told Reinhold he could start that Monday."

Just amazing how many big-name techs there are in the Hollywood area.

It's wise to stick with a local tech...that way if something isn't to your satisfaction you can handle it in person.

Re: Jtm30 in the shop

glad your amp is working fine. that is a good standard practice to have a tech look over your used amp, especially a super awesome tech like that dude!

it was sounding pretty cool, but once the treble knob started going bonkers I figured it was time for a tune up. when turned up, the amp would get quieter, and when turned down, it would actually get louder, but the treble didn't seem to be affected much by turning the knob. I reach for the treble a lot, depending on my mood so that immediately drove me nuts.

Re: Jtm30 in the shop

I see, bummer man; I can relate to your quirkiness about amp stuff... hope it is a cheap fix ;)

I know I am supposed to take my used gear/amp to a tech right after I buy it, so he can stop any probs before they start. But ya it takes a lil' motivatin'
