Jubilee/Slash tones from a pedal?

Re: Jubilee/Slash tones from a pedal?

Well The Alnico II slash signature pickups would be a start, but don't expect to throw a set of pickups in a guitar & sound like Slash. It will help you get closer to where you want to be, but quite honestly an Epi Les Paul is going to be a bit brighter. You may also need to check the pots. Some have 300k pots and this is to take some of the treble out. If they have 500K (which is normal for humbuckers) Leave them and see how it sounds after the pickups are in. If you don't want to drop the $ for the Slash AII then just go with the regular AII. The primary difference is his signature pickups have a bit more output.

I have them in my Les Paul(the slash model) and I love them. Although I am not a huge Slash fan(he is a very good player btw) I am more of Clapton/Hendrix disciple. Yet these pickups made me fall in love with my Les Paul all over again. I've been playing that particular guitar since around 92 or 93. It just sounds soo much fuller with these pickups.

Have a look at Blackstar pedals particularly the Drive or the Dual. They work really well with Marshalls. Ask Stevie Bees.

Re: Jubilee/Slash tones from a pedal?

I am guessing a good JCM 800 pedal will get you closer such as the Wampler Plexstortion or maybe a crunchbox (might be too bright) but I don't know if a 5 watt has the headroom to get that slash tone especially in combo form may be a bit small sounding so I probably would fork out too much cash maybe just get the AII see how you go and if you can't get enough gain then get a pedal.

Seriously though - practice, practice, practice.

Re: Jubilee/Slash tones from a pedal?

I've got a Class 5 combo as well. If you have a good set of alnico 2 PAFish pups and run the amp's volume at 1 o'clock and the treble at 1-3 o'clock mids 10-12 o'clock and the bass at 9 o'clock you've got the right EQ. From there you need a hard hitting warm sounding boost. Personally with that amp I really like my MXR GT-OD. It has more low mids than my analogman modded SD-1 so sonically I prefer it with the smaller amp and speaker. I run the level at about 1 o'clock the gain at 11-1 o'clock and the tone at noon.

Now it's not dead on, and your results will vary but you start getting in the neighborhood and can tweak further. Fact is at that volume you're pretty dang loud for a little amp. I run a little more treble for definition and high end cut, but if I was recording just solo lines I'd crank the mids up more.

Hope that helps.

MI Audio Crunch Box after adjusting the internal trim pot will get you in the ballpark into a nice, clean channel. Also, the Rothwell Hellbender will get you real close.

If you really want a pedal . . . look into the Carl Martin PlexiTone.

KILLER Marshall tone in a box !

Re: Jubilee/Slash tones from a pedal?

just the a2 pups would be a great start. See what you can make the class 5 do on its own!

Re: Jubilee/Slash tones from a pedal?

as far as pedals go, different pedals sound different with different amps, so best thing is to get to know the amp first and beg borrow of steal a few different ones to get a feel for what will work best.
Rats are hard to beat tho...but also mxr classic overdrives sound great thru a marshall.

Re: Jubilee/Slash tones from a pedal?

I have this AMT M1 pedal and it produces really great '80s Marshall tones:

About the Silver Jubilee, I think the it is rather one-of-the-kind. I used that, the JCM800 and the JCM900 extensively and I liked them all. You can go easily like the 800 or 900 with the AMT M1 and you can get it really close to Slash-y tones but I can't name anything I've seen or heard so far that would give you a Jubilee sound and feel.

Re: Jubilee/Slash tones from a pedal?

an AVT 50 should be able to get a distorted Marshall sound without a pedal into it's clean channel... even if i hate most of Marshalls SS designs they do try and design their SS stuff to sound like a Marshall... mostly i hate SS Marshalls clean channels over their distorted tones... so adding a pedal in front of an AVT makes little sense to me unless you are boosting for the leads...

you don't need a stack of Marshalls and a Slash Signature LP to get the job done... you'll just need to find a nice tone and work with it

Re: Jubilee/Slash tones from a pedal?

+100

Slash's playing and overall tone is unique, but IMO his sound is really just the tried and true formula of Les Paul + Marshall.

There's not really anything in the way of you getting the same sound from your LP and Marshall AVT or Class 5.

(plz notice my specific use of "sound" and "tone")

+ a billion.
I have a Wampler Pinnacle and the Carl Martin PlexiTone.
Both excellent pedals.
The CMPT sounds like AFD. Using my Les Paul with Seth Lover/Antiquity mix into an AC15C1, closest to a Marshall tone you could ever get out of that setup, and specifically, that hot-rodded Marshall tone found in Slash's sound.
