I need a new amp for christmas (I´ve a Fender Frontman amp...:yell: ), can you recommend something to start my tone quest?. It doesn´t matter what style is it for (metal, blues, etc), I just need a true "amp" between $500 and $1000.

Help!!!!

Re: Just a simple question

since the one you are playing out of now is small and you didn't say what you played really i am going to suggest a fender blues jr. great little tube amp and it is under 500. a few guys here swear by them.

I'll agree with that !!!
Nice Amp for the $$............:)

Re: Just a simple question

some marshall solid states? using one of em as my practice amp.

Re: Just a simple question

1000 gets you into used twin reverb range, brand new hot rod deluxe, used marshall tube amps, rectoverb head...lots of options for that kind of money.

how big of an amp are you looking for?

Re: Just a simple question

I've been seeing used Soldano 50 watt Hot Rods for between $800 and $1000 on ebay. Thats alot of amp for a little dough.

Re: Just a simple question

Get a used 5150 combo. $500-600

Re: Just a simple question

Are you going to buy Used or New ?

In this range, you have lots of pretty cool amps. Personaly, I'd go with a RIVERA. For 1000$ you can find a nice M60/M100 and a 2x12 cab. Maybe a K55 non-reverb.

Laneys are great too, you can also find a nice JCM800 combo 2x12 at this price... lots of cool options I tell you. Lots of.

Re: Just a simple question

Blues Junior is good, but why not step it up a notch and go with the Hot Rod Deluxe? 40w tube, and it's under $600.
That's if you're willing to use a distortion pedal for (I'm assuming by your username) the kind of distortion you want.

But for $1000, you could get a XXX combo, or a Carvin Legacy combo (I think they're under $1000). Or used, you could get some good Mesa's.

Marshall TSL 601 is pretty good, IMO pretty metallish territory with distortion...but I'm not a metal player, so don't take my word on that.

Go try some out!

Re: Just a simple question

Thanks guys, I really apreciate your help.I was going to get an used amp, but keep in mind that I live in Argentina, and the dolar here is $2,50 so for U$600 you can´t buy anything decent. BUT, I could buy i.e a brand new Peavey Delta Blues which is around U$700 in the States, or something like that. Do you know some tube amps of 30-50w that are good deals for $500 to $900?

Used Riveras are great in that price range.
Definataly second that. A Knucklehead will do metal, blues, to very clean stuff. Definatly check some out.

Re: Just a simple question

As an Argentine guitar player, are you familiar with Ariel Pozzo? That reminds me, I've heard him sound pretty darn good through a Nativo amp.

Re: Just a simple question

lets see

you could get a used blackface bassman head & an avatar cab

you could get a used hot rod deluxe or deville, which you'll probably end up getting a distortion pedal & new speakers for, great amps

you could get an orange

you could probably swing a jcm800 combo

peavey classics

personally i'd go for the bassman or the hot rod, but that's me

Re: Just a simple question

Used 5150, or better yet, a Classic 30 or 50 and pedals. Cheap, reliable, and sound great!

Re: Just a simple question

I would suggest a Peavey Classic 50 (great tone; true to the guitar) or, if you are feeling "Froggy" a Genz-Benz Diablo Pentode/Triode (60/30). This is a single 12" amp that sounds HUGE! I have never heard anything so monstrous in such a small package. Like a "Stack in the box".

Re: Just a simple question

Crate V5112 if you can find one used will probably run you around $500, I own this amp and I love it. Not many people try it out because of the name but I think its distortion is nicer then the Marshall DSL40 and DSL60 combo. I have never used a modded DSL40 or DSL60, I am talking about a stock ones. Another great choice would be a Peavey Classic 30 or 50 with a nice distortion petal.

I´ve heard him playing through a Nativo stack, but that time he was using his PRS Custom 22 and he had a decent sound.

His amp set-up was a Groove Tubes Trio pre-amp and Marshall aniversary model I think

Thanks for your help

Re: Just a simple question

I think you should really decide what type of music you'll be playing most often with this amp. I wouldn't recommend a Fender if you're playing mostly metal, just like I wouldn't recommend a 5150 for blues.

When it comes to versatility, my favorite amps are the Peavey Classic 50, Fender Bassman, and Marshall DSL 50. The 5150 is great if you play mostly rock and metal.
