Just Bought a Mesa Boogie Mark II (new amp content!)

Re: Just Bought a Mesa Boogie Mark II (new amp content!)

I'll try to get some clips up in the next couple days once I get a good handle on the EQ section.

Re: Just Bought a Mesa Boogie Mark II (new amp content!)

I just picked this thing up yesterday, it's a 60 watt Boogie Mark IIB, two channel with reverb and graphic eq. It was really filthy when I bought it, chassis was full of dust and the knobs were all sticky and crackly, but a couple hours with a scrub brush, soapy water, and a can of contact cleaner and it almost looks brand new. Only one small tear in the tolex and
one broken eq slider (which is still functional)
What do you guys know about these amps? It's definitely built like a tank, heaviest 1x12 combo I've ever lifted.

Time for a resurrction:

Never fails. A C+ fan dissing a II or IIB.

The C+ rules in the Lead mode, which is why most people are into Boogies. The IIB's cleans are outstanding (better than the C+ imho). It's fantastic as a pedal platform. With the EQ, you can get some great Lead tones. Especially when it's loud.

Also: unplug the speaker and put it through a closed back cab. Very cool. I've considered converting mine to a head.

If you haven't gotten the hang of it, the trick to eliminating the *POP* when pedaling between Lead and Rhythm is to blunt the strings just before switching. Takes some practice, but you get used to it.

I'm wondering whether you got the hang of the Presence knob, yet? It really makes a BIG difference. I used to dial the bass WAY down on my IIB. The Presence changes all of that. Check out these settings, if you haven't already:

Thanks! I'll give those settings a try. Still loving the amp, I had to replace the original power tunes, but it's still got the set of old tung-sol and Mesa preamp tubes that were in the amp. It sounds amazing, particularly on the clean channel. I play mostly blues and jazz, so I haven't explored the lead channel much past mild breakup, but it sounds good too. I have not played with the presence enough, need to try balancing the bass knob with it. It's a strange beast, but I keep finding great sounds with it, and it takes pedals extremely well.

Re: Just Bought a Mesa Boogie Mark II (new amp content!)

Ive recently been extremely blessed to have play time on the glorious MKIIC+.
Can you modify the B to C+ specs through Petuluma Boogie?
If not, then yours all other Boogies will fall extremely short of the glory of the legendary MIIC+.
( AND IT IS A GREAT GLORY_)

Re: Just Bought a Mesa Boogie Mark II (new amp content!)

Mesa Boogie will do the upgrade to C+ I believe. It makes the effects loop line level so it plays nicer with some effects, increases the gain on the lead channel, and changes the voicing a bit. I'm not particularly interested in having it done though. I don't play extremely high gain (in fact I spend most of my time on the clean channel), and own a number of very nice overdrives if I wanted to give this amp a kick in the pants. I wouldn't want to risk compromising the epic clean channel to gain features I wouldn't use. The C+ has a beautiful high-gain lead tone though, if I ever come across a small mountain of money I wouldn't mind picking up one of them too.

+1 on schechterplayer's post.

They used to do the upgrade to C+ from the later model B that was right before the C, as I understand it. No more. I did a lot of research on this, as I was really interested in the mod. Here's what I found:

1) The mod was originally set up specific to the effects loop. The IIB effects loop was the first of it's kind and they made a "mistake" in putting the reverb BEFORE the loop instead of after. As a result, when you've got the reverb engaged, there can be some serious problems in the effects loop. Not so if you're not using or don't have a reverb on your Boogie.

2) The way the effects loop is set up makes for a punchier sound in the Lead mode than the later "corrected" versions on the Lead channel. It's a little more transparent and not as thick/creamy as the IIC, IIC+, III, etc. But, honestly: it kicks ass if you set it up right with the EQ, Presence, and Treble knob pulled. Very unique sound that you won't find in any (and I mean "ANY") pedal or amp out there on the market, today.

3) The mod will make your IIB into a "poor man's IIC+". Which is not a bad thing at all if you want a thicker Lead tone. I've heard people rave about it. But if you're into the clean sounds, like me, you might want to pass on the mod. It changes the clean tone. Still sounds good…but if you're into what you're hearing now, know that it'll change. I asked Mike B (the only "original" guy there) at Mesa about it and he said it would alter that clean sound, somewhat. Red flag for me. It was right after the IIB that Mesa started getting more heavily into the overdriven sounds. The IIB was the last of the "original" Boogie sounds. I LOVE the clean tones on the IIB. And with the OD on the clean dialed in right, you can get some ridiculous awesome sounds. If you want serious dirt, pick up an XTS Atomic OD and/or Multi-Drive (I've got the Preamp, which has both and the Pegasus Boost), Suhr Riot, Wampler Pinnacle, etc. They're unbelievably great distortion pedals that work perfectly off of a fantastic clean platform. And that's exactly where the IIB shines: as a fantastic clean platform.

If you play loud, you don't need the Lead channel, btw. Use the Treble, pulled, along with your guitar's volume pot. Serious. If you play lower volumes, see above. The pedals they've got out there are incredible.

Honestly: I've heard that the mod's great. But I wouldn't mess with the original amp if you're into the clean tones. It's a very unique sound. You say you're into jazz? You've got a stellar amp for that. I took lessons from a jazz heavyweight and he loved this amp. IMO, it's got one of the best if not THE best clean tones out there. And let me tell ya that the Fender freaks HATE me saying that, lol.

HOWEVER: if you want a thicker dirt channel and could care less about the cleans: Sure: go for it. For the people that want that sound, it's supposed to be fantastic.

I had a II, a III and a IV. All great amps...all need time to dial in. The II, as stated, makes a great pedal platform. Why mod it? A couple of OD pedals and yer in business. I think its worth more as is than trying to hack it up. The reason they hold up so well is that they are very well made. I gigged my IV for seventeen years with never a failure.
