Its been my go too pickup since the 90's.

Its going in my 74's Gibson SG Standard.

Ive tried many pups since the 90's but i always keep going back to the SH-5.

What do you like about it? Anything that you would change?

That's because it's awesome. It sounds just right and hints at a lot of the classic tones we love with more umph!

Its got alot of grind, tight bottom, killler mids and very balanced overall. And each one is very consistent.

The story is Seymour made it for EVH but never got the official endorsement, i wouldn't change a thing.

I thought this would be a good place for uncommon Custom knowledge. Did you know that the 78, Custom, Custom Custom, IM1, the idea for the 59/C, and quite possibly the great 59 itself all stem from EVH, but not the Custom 5. It's hidden deep in the original 59/C thread, but the idea for the 59/C came from BachToRock having a conversation with EVH. The 59 also may or may not have been the original PAF that Seymour overwound into the Custom. This rumour was started because a 59b and Custom sound suspiciously similar if both have the same magnet. But then again, Eddie never recorded with a C5, so that might reduce the possibility of the rumour being true. Or maybe he was wound something similar to a C5 and thought he liked ceramic better after the fact, quite possible because he later switched from ceramic to A2.

The rumor in the 80's was the Duncan JB was "Jeff Becks" pup but was never endorsed as well.

Anyone ever hear that ?

Re: Just bought another SH-5 Duncan Custom

Another thing I find quite interesting in JB related history is that Jason Becker wanted JB minus the upper midspike that we all know is characteristic of the pickup. This became the Perpetual Burn. It was JB's take on the JB, but it wasn't quite a JB, so it was a PB. And if you get one wound by Maricela Juarez, It's a PBJ.

Not really important, but I find it interesting.

If MJ winds a Custom Custom, it's a CCJ, which (in the UK at least) is a County Court Judgement. So having a CCJ over here would confuse people.

To me a JB has a spongy/fuzzy bottom & spikey highs i don't like. One thing i read about Warren DeMartini & the JB, he used a JB in the early albums with the Bass knobs on his Marshall JMP's set @ 0.00 which amazed me cuz he had plenty of bottom on the album. He also recorded most of the Lead tracks for those albums on a Fender Champ.

I love the JB, I heard a rumour it stood for "Jazz Bridge" or Jazz Blues. I love the jb because it is just a classic and fantastic pickup for just about anything.

Re: Just bought another SH-5 Duncan Custom

Good man. The Custom is one of the best humbuckers ever conjured up.

Re: Just bought another SH-5 Duncan Custom

I am surprised it wasn't in that rig already. It is like the Custom was made for a great SG + Marshall combo.

JMP/HBE, what kind of styles do you play? What other guitars do you have it in? What do you usually pair it with?

I play Rock/Hard Rock/Classic Rock as i grew up in those era's.
Currently i have the SH-5/59 Combo in 3 Les Pauls but ive used that combo since the mid 90's.
I can remember when an SH-5 was like $65 bucks, now they're $100 each.
I set of pups can run $300 bucks or more nowdays.

I'm in agreement with blueman335, an UOA5 is very nice in a Custom. It is also very nice in C/59.
