Just bought my new amp : )

I played a Bad Cat Hot Cat 30 for a while and fell in love with it.

The cleans are the best I've ever heard, yes, for those that love the Matchless Chieftain, these are the same! Chime, clarity and tone, tone, tone!

The distortion took some major tweaking. It's voiced more towards a Marshall Silver Jubilee. It's raw rock and roll. I had to tweak with the controls to get rid of a little bit of the fuzzy high end it had going on. However, once I dialed it in right, I got great crunch tones and that sold me (and it was at a decent volume as well, but man... 30 watts is LOUD!!!)

It's pretty quiet, so removing any and all hum shouldn't be much of a problem. This is much appreciated after the other three amps I have owned.

I compared this amp to some other highend amps: the Savage Blitz 50 (great overdrive, but can't switch to my kind of cleans), Rivera Fandango, THD Flexi.

Re: Just bought my new amp : )

Congrats-I really like Sampson's amps

Did you have a chance to compare with a Savage Rohr? (spelling?)

Re: Just bought my new amp : )

I envy you, what with that sweet-ass Grosh and now this baby...I'd love to see some pics of them next to eachother. :laugh2:

Did you sell that tube monster???

Very sweet Brother....one of these days, one of these days!!!! :yell:

Re: Just bought my new amp : )

When I was at the Bad Cat factory, James pretty much told me that Sampson didn't have much to do with the Hot Cat. He wanted it voiced differently and he and James had a disagreement. Turns out James was right and the HC is and has been their best seller. Sampson is now making amps under the name Starr.

Re: Just bought my new amp : )

Good info Scott, I didn't know about that!

The distortion definitely takes some tweaking, but when I demoed it it was with a different cabinet than the combo I'm getting.

The Flexi was a great amp from what I've played. Cranked, it got awesome plexi tone. To be honest, the only amp I liked better for plexi that I've tried was a Savage Blitz 50 (and that really was a sick amp, I now know why Stone Gossard from Pearl Jam uses one).

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to try the Rohr. The man who runs Junior's Music in Clinton, CT told me that the Blitz was the best model they make and from my ears it wouldn't surprise me :).

I did manage to sell that tube monster, the Triamp. It cost me $90 to ship it from CT to FL.... :smack:

Here's a pic to tide you guys over (now you guys are REALLY going to hate me :D):

To be honest, if I had the Savage Blitz "plexi"-ish tone with the Hot Cat clean, I would be in a state of euphoria. However, the distortion still has a great crunchy and articulate sound, I'm sure with enough tweaking I can get it to sound right. My audiophile friend said that if I ever want to sell it, he'll be happy to buy it off of me.

Jesus Christ that's a good looking amp.

the flexi is an option to me as they are imported locally. Badcat matchless and pretty much every other boutique manufacturer don't make it down here.

Trust me, if you want an affordable flexible plexi, the THD Flexi 50 fits the bill. I loved one I played at Guitar Hangar. I recommend you get a Hot Plate for it as the cranked tone is the best way to go and while it's nice to switch to 20w, don't be fooled, 20w is louder than bedroom level stuff (you gig so I don't think that'll be a problem ;) ).

With the master and boost mode on, the Flexi delivers probably my favorite rhythm tone, a Marshall Super Lead. Thick, sustaining, rich, crunchy and articulate pretty much sums up the sound. I'm picky when it comes to sound, I give it two thumbs up :bigok:

Wow, I thought the Hot Cat was going to have "good, but not great cleans". The cleans on the Hot Cat are as easy as you could ever get them to be, brilliance (aka chime) and level :laugh2: It reminds me of the Chieftain that I had to dial in to get "just right". What they say is true, a great guitar through a good amp = good tone, but a great guitar through a great amp is pure bliss. Can't wait, I bought this one online and it'll be here in less than a week, crazy amounts of clips will of course be posted ;)
