Just curious. How may of us use picks and how many finger pick?

I have been finger picking for years. I cut my thumb the other night and went out and bought some picks so I could keep on playing. Still taking a lot of getting used to but I am enjoying the change.
Noticed:
the pick is a booster in itself;
takes a lot more skill than I remember;
creates a whole different tone;
allows to change the volume I'm playing at a lot easier than with fingers.
I'll still go back to finger picking style once my thumb heals because it gives me a lot more control on what I'm playing.
What do you pick with and why do you like it?

I play mostly rock and metal, so I use a pick, but I've been trying to finger pick more lately for softer stuff and I'm really enjoying it so far

Do both. Flatpick more often than fingers but use both and many times use a combination of flatpick and one or two fingers at the same time. Was a Classical Guitar Performance major in collage but rarely use those rest free techniques in what I now play.

I use a pick. Not into finger picking.

I do a bit of both.....not the bluegrass style fingerpicking but a mix of some individual fingers here and there and the 'Andy from PGS' style.

A bit of both. If I'm rocking some Zep or GnR or whatever, I grab a pick. If I want to play Extreme's big hit, More Than Words, I lay the pick down. But I hold it much more than I lay it down. At my age the Extreme tune doesn't have the same effect on the ladies anyhow... and if it does they usually have a better stash than I can grow.

Both, but being a Metal player I'd obviously have to use a flatpick more so. I use a Clayton Acetal, gauge 1.90mm.

It has quick release, a good natural grip and goes up to a really heavy gauge. A lot of companies stop at 1.14mm being the heaviest. That's way too light for me.

It depends on what I have on hand. I have been known to play stop and chop with bare nails.

Both, but more with a flat pick. Playing mostly rock and I like the extra volume and attack that a pick gives me. I like to finger-pick for softer stuff... I like to think of it as a Jim Croce style.

For flat picks I use Dunlop Tortex.73mm (yellow) for electric guitar (except the 10-string). For the acoustics (and the Perfect 10) it's the same pick but in the .50mm (red).

For finger-picking I have always used an old set of 1968 phalanges by Steve & Anita... didn't start using them for playing guitar, though, until about 1984. [emoji6]

Flat picks for me. Never got into finger picking, and that was made impossible due to a minor accident around the house that left one finger unable to bend much (cobra bite).

Both. Though with distortion hardly ever use fingers. I'll hybrid pick on electric more than just fingers...the old hide the pick with the index finger trick. On acoustic steel string I finger pick often, especially couch jamming. On my nylon string ...well that's 99% finger picking...picks on nylon string usually don't sound right.

Both for electric and acoustic (guitars and bass)

Might sound redneck, but super glue your cut and you can still finger pick ;)

Cobra bite? Big-ass spider for your avatar?

Have you considered that some of your habits may be unhealthy? [emoji12][emoji33]

Phil Keaggy is missing majority of his middle finger and he still finger picks ;)

Mostly pick, but I'm doing a lot more hybrid picking lately.

Pick, but have been doing finger style playing a lot and its pretty cool.

Re: Just curious. How may of us use picks and how many finger pick?

Never learned to finger pick, so a plectrum it is...

Re: Just curious. How may of us use picks and how many finger pick?

Hybrid picker. Since my thumb doesn't have the percussive attack of a green Tortex and can't really speed pick, I find that using a combination of pick, middle, and ring finger does the best job.

For softer acoustic playing, I can ditch the pick and use only thumb and fingers.
