Just curious. How may of us use picks and how many finger pick?

Re: Just curious. How may of us use picks and how many finger pick?

Both but mainly finger pick. I also 'hold' a non existent pick and with my hand in that position use my index fingernail as I would a pick

Cobra bite? Big-ass spider for your avatar?

Have you considered that some of your habits may be unhealthy?

Not just any spider, Poecilotheria, which have a decent bite. Plus there's all the spiny palms in my yard...

Phil Keaggy is missing majority of his middle finger and he still finger picks

Great player, I don't know how those guys do it. Gotta be tough. Speaking of fingers, Tony Iommi lost a few fingertips of his fretting hand when he was a teenager, and still manages to play somehow.

And then there are guys without arms who still manage to play!

I've always used a pick, but over the past year and a half or so i've gotten heavily into Winery Dogs and Richie Kotzen's solo stuff. And his playing has inspired me to learn to play without a pick. So at this point I'd say i spend equal time between using a pick and using my fingers. Most of the time when i pick up my acoustic or sit with my electric unplugged it's without a pick. I've gotten more comfortable with using my fingers but i've got a long way to go in learning various nuances, like getting different levels of attack out of using my fingers.

I hybrid pick. Pick + 3 other fingers. Learned to do it while practicing Chet Atkins-style, but couldn't get used to a thumbpick. I strive for a sound where the listener can't tell if I am using my fingers or regular pick. I use the flesh, not the nails, since it squicks me out. I hybrid pick with nylon string too. I never purely fingerpick for anything.

I just want to give you cudos for the proper use of the word "squicks!" :D

Interesting, I have never picked with my little finger. I'll have to check some Chet Atkins technique information and see how this works.

So you play single note melodies incorporating your pinky, or chord fragments using middle ring & pinky?
