Just don't dig the C5

I put a C5 in my old Les Paul and I just can't bond with it. It just seems sterile to me. What magnet options do I have with a C5. Am I correct saying a A2 would make it a Custom Custom or a Ceramic would make it a Custom? I just love the Custom Custom but I'm not sure how it would do in a 12 lb mahogany body guitar.

Re: Just don't dig the C5

You are correct in saying that an A2 would be a CC and a ceramic would be a Custom.

The A2 CC might be too middy in that guitar, try a ceramic. Ceramic Customs rock in LPs

Re: Just don't dig the C5

Cue masses to run in here praising the A8 as godly Though it might be what you want

Saying sterile though is pretty non specific can you give more details about what you dont like about the C5?

Re: Just don't dig the C5

The standard Custom is a serious beast in a good Les Paul.

Re: Just don't dig the C5

A2's are usually too dark in LP's. For more warmth (less treble and more mids) and a richer, fuller sound, either A8 or UOA5 are the best mag choices.

An A8 will make your C5 a 'C8', a very popular PU here, arguably the best of the Custom line. Besides the other qualities (above), it'll add a little output too. C8's are great with gain or clean, and work well in many woods for many genres. Many C5 owners jumped ship and went with C8's when A8's become more widely available a few years ago.

UO C5's (C5 with a UOA5) are slightly warmer than a C8, a little less output, and have much more A2-type dynamics. That means a more complex, dynamic, earthy, organic sound. If you want a 'PAF on Steroids' this is the way to go.

"Old Les Paul".

Hmmmm....

Sounds like a case for the DC.

Re: Just don't dig the C5

Where can I get a A8 magnet. You guys got me curious :reporter:

Re: Just don't dig the C5

regular Custom? It would help to try out different magnets. The C5 sounds a bit more bloated in the bass than the Custom and is harsher on the treble as gain is added. The Custom will have a more immediate attack and slightly more focused mids. The CC sounds the warmest and its overall feel is a bit looser compared to the rest. I don't find any of the Customs sterile, but it might be the base tone they have in common (I find in particular, the congested sounding mids) that is not to your liking.

Re: Just don't dig the C5

Has anyone tried "Airing" a C5 by removing the keeper bar? ;)

Re: Just don't dig the C5

You never said what you didn't like about it...

"The C5 sounds a bit more bloated in the bass than the Custom and is harsher on the treble as gain is added."

This hits it on the nail head. That harshness with gain. The C5 sound good clean and very nice with the Jazz Neck on cleans but with overdrive :smack:

Re: Just don't dig the C5

i like it better than the JB, but that's about it.

now a UOA5 custom..... that's a different story.
