Just don't dig the C5

Re: Just don't dig the C5

Seymour didn't really create the Custom 5. SDUGF members did. It has harsh treble and to much bass in the guitars I've tried it in. Seymour probably did experiment with an A5 magnet in the Custom but I'm guessing he heard it, knew it wasn't happening and just rejected it. But the magnet swappers here on the forum recreated it by putting an A5 magnet in a Duncan Custom and now it's part of the line.

Seymour knows how to voice pickups - but he didn't voice this one for an A5 magnet.

I like the regular Duncan Custom a lot better. Sounds great in a Les Paul and I've also used it in Strats. Sounds best, IMO, in a Les Paul.

A2's are usually too dark in LP's. For more warmth (less treble and more mids) and a richer, fuller sound, either A8 or UOA5 are the best mag choices.

An A8 will make your C5 a 'C8', a very popular PU here, arguably the best of the Custom line. Besides the other qualities (above), it'll add a little output too. C8's are great with gain or clean, and work well in many woods for many genres. Many C5 owners jumped ship and went with C8's when A8's become more widely available a few years ago.

UO C5's (C5 with a UOA5) are slightly warmer than a C8, a little less output, and have much more A2-type dynamics. That means a more complex, dynamic, earthy, organic sound. If you want a 'PAF on Steroids' this is the way to go.

Well put on the C8!!

Pepi,
Didnt read all the replies, but Ill just toss my little bit in.. The C8 IMO, has alil less bottom and top and more soul/vibe. Its really a great mix if you like different things about the different customs..
