Just finished my #1 (HSS strat w/ Floyd Rose)

Long time lurker but wanted to share my experience in building my guitar since it involves a few things I see get asked repeatedly.

Pickup Configuration:

Neck - SSL-2
Middle - SSL-2 RWRP
Bridge - Custom Custom (TB-11) auto-split w/ screw coil active.

Initially I wired the strat using Seymour Duncan's wiring diagram. However, it didn't explain what to do with the RWRP. Since the auto-split in the diagram uses the slug coil (North), the SSL-2 RWRP (North) goes in the neck and the SSL-2 (South) goes in the middle to keep the hum canceling at 2 and 4. I also moved the tone control to the bridge by moving the wire from the middle to the bridge on the switch (leaving the middle pickup with no tone control ala Eric Johnson strat). After closing it all up, I was OK with the 250k tone control on the bridge humbucker but I didn't like the sound of the 2nd position. It didn't sound at all like an SSS strat in the 2nd position. It sounded more like a less ballsy humbucker since they are so close together. A good sound but not the strat sound I wanted. So I decided to open it back up and rewire everything.

Based on the distance of a bridge pickup to the bridge and the distance to the middle pickup on an SSS strat, I decided the auto-split should use the screw coil and not the slug. I swapped the Neck and Middle pickups on the pickguard (to keep the hum canceling) and rewired their switch locations. While inside, I moved the tone back to the middle pickup. The bridge is now running wide open (no tone control).

Other upgrades are upgraded switch and pots (all 250k), orange drop cap, that fancy cloth covered wire, brass block and titanium inserts for the floyd, and shielded everything under the pickguard with copper shielding.

Results are exactly what I had hoped. Great strat tone in positions 2 thru 5 with a great sounding humbucker in the bridge. And yes, position 2 sounds exactly like a position 2 on an SSS should sound. Thanks to Wolf5150 - I used his single coil height measurements of 4/32 on the bass and 3/32 on the treble side for the single coils and went with the same for the humbucker for the benefit of the split screw coil.

Things to do in the future: install trem stop to keep Floyd from floating, install 500k no-load tone pot and move the humbucker back to it. Anyway, thanks to everybody for the assistance.

Stunning....THE superstrat.

A stop c'mon man take a little wood off the back of the trem spring rout at 45 degree angle for more pull up ! Whole point in a trem is to be able to use it , you block it and you just have something that takes away sustain for no good reason.Nice guitar ,we likes it a lot. Saw one very much like that with 3 humbuckers wired series/split/parallel was pretty spiffy. Excellent work with the shielding , very neatly done.

I find the saddles and height on tremolos to be more comfortable to play on than Gibson style tune-o-matics, even if I never use them. It's usually pretty hard to find hard tail bodies. If it wasn't for Squier having a hardtail Bullet Humbucker Telecaster this year, I'd probably be picking up a few regular Strat bodies and blocking the trem on each one. :D

I'm not blocking it, just putting a trem stop on it. I NEVER pull up on a trem and appreciate the guitar staying in tune when I break strings on stage (and can also toss on a D-Tuna if I want). But I do have to come clean on something. The main reason I use Floyds is because they stay in tune so damn well. I'm pretty aggressive when I pick and bend notes and knock guitars out of tune pretty easily. I rarely use a trem. If I could pull off some of the sounds this guy does as effortlessly, I'd probably use the trem more however. I should probably practice more!

Nice job on the strat, looks great!

Instead of a trem stop, I would recommend an ESP Backstop or a Goldo Blackbox. You can get the Goldo from fu-tone.com, http://www.fu-tone.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=70&products_id=222 or cheaper off ebay, http://www.ebay.com/itm/Goeldo-Gold...289?pt=Guitar_Accessories&hash=item20e5824509. I have one or the other in all of my floyd guitars, they do wonders for stability but still let you pull up, or, you can tighten the spring until there is a lot of resistance to pull-ups so it is pretty much a stop. Of course, I have trouble with commitment, so I like the stability without having to commit to a full stop ;-)

I think I'm going to give the Goldo a try. I have a trem stop in a different guitar with a floyd and I don't like it. It feels like I'm dropping a wrench onto an anvil when I let go of the Floyd. This Goldo looks good and keeps it full floating as well as gives me stability if I break a string mid song (at least better than without it). You can't beat the price either.

Thanks!

Re: Just finished my #1 (HSS strat w/ Floyd Rose)

That's awesome. Whenever I get around to building a replica/salute/homage to Brad Gillis' red '62 Strat, it will be much more like this than my 3-hum monster '90 American Standard Strat.

This is my first HSS and I absolutely love it. The secret is wiring the auto split to the screw coil. Why everybody splits to the slug coil makes no sense to me if you want that position 2 Strat sound.

I want this guitar to be versatile so I have a D-Tuna and Goldo Blackbox on order. I'm also debating eliminating the 2nd tone and turning it into a blender pot. I'm not a big fan of multiple tone controls anyway.

Once I install the stuff coming in, I'll get a good picture of the guitar. That silver paint isn't a flat silver like it looks in the picture. It has sparkles in it which looks cool on stage. :)

Re: Just finished my #1 (HSS strat w/ Floyd Rose)

thats pretty happening.
fyi...you can use 500k pots and add 470ohm resistors so that the single coil pickups end up "seeing" 250k(ish). That way all the pickups sound their best.

I think this is the way to go. Thanks for the tip. Out of curiosity, if I go this route, what happens in position 2 or position 4? Do the resistors combine?
