I finally dove in and set up my guitar after reading a few guides and I'm quite pleased with my self.

Re: Just finished my first set up!

well done. any pics? ive been meaning to setup my guitar for a while but never got around to learning how to do it properly. a friend of mine has a warlock that he wants me to set the intonation and action on but it seems no matter what i do with the bridge saddles and no matter where i move them the intonation at the 12th fret seems the same and its really bad pretty much a semitone out in some places. any ideas?

Old strings can throw off intonation. You may want to raise the saddles a bit. Sometimes a string may be catching the top end of a fret but not enough to buzz. Is this a TOM or a trem bridge?

Re: Just finished my first set up!

the strings are new (he changed em about a month ago but hasnt played since the intonation so they are still really clean and bright) the tremolo is a floyed rose but we locked it by adding 2 spings and putting blocks of plywood in the gap where the trem would move so now the tremolo is perfectly rigid and perfectly straight and unusable. the intonation was out before we did this.

Re: Just finished my first set up!

Intonation is really a last step in settting a guitar up. There are a lot of things that can throw it off. Check the neck straightness. Adjust it if it needs it. I would try raising the saddles a bit and go very slowly. Make small adjustments and then check it. Sometimes it only takes a small adjustment, move it too far and the intonation is out again. You may want to have it set up professionally once to set everything to "zero" and work from there. I've done that in the past and it really helps you to learn.

See my post on the intonation thread in the Vault. If you follow it step by step, your guitar will play perfectly and be in tune, no matter where you are on the neck.
