Just got a Duncan Designed HB-112 (Screamin' Demon meets JB meets Duncan Distortion?)

Re: Just got a Duncan Designed HB-112 (Screamin' Demon meets JB meets Duncan Distorti

I'm loving the color on that. Would you call that "coffee"? Would a zebra version be coffee-with-cream? :scratchch

I'd call that black under camera flash. ;)

You know, I looked at it close to see if if it was something like that, and concluded that it was brown-ish. Dang . . . I love that color. Would look cool in my old Danelectro Bellzouki of that same color.

They are standard Duncan black. I have some from that same seller's lot...

Re: Just got a Duncan Designed HB-112 (Screamin' Demon meets JB meets Duncan Distorti

i was just surprised that it sounded better than the "real" seymour duncan

In this particular guitar, yes. The SZ520 has a particular "hollow" quality to it that makes it hard to find pickups for. I've owned about four of them. Don't know if it's the wood quality or the chambering. I've found the JB sounds best but the stock was "custom made" for the guitar and sounds right in the bridge. I'm leaving one of mine stock with the Duncan Designed.

The SZ720 sounds more like a Les Paul, thicker tone, I think a wider variety of pickups would work.

Remember that the D-designed have nickel plated brass plates instead of solid nickel, so this MIGHT make the mids more prominent and drop the high end down a little.

I might have to get one to pop an A8 into.

The SZ320ex I have also has that 'hollow' kind of tone. I think the way it is wired (3 way switch that splits both buckers on the slug side for a faux middle pickup tone) makes it a kinda 'quacky' sounding guitar. Does this makes sense lol? :D Overall it's a very dark guitar that probably takes brighter pickups very well.

I like the stock neck pickup a lot, basically a slightly hotter/dirtier '59 model.
Didn't like the bridge bucker that much to be honest. Lacked bottom end and sounded very compressed. I have a CUOA5 in there now but I'm not sure it's staying. I know that Diego has good results with a Screaming demon in the bridge position and I'm curious about trying a Super Distortion in there. Don't care about cleans much because it's my drop C chainsaw guitar.

This thread makes me want to give the duncan designed another try... :banghead:
:why:

Stick an A8 in it.

Are they really chambered? Man, I love the SZ. I got mine from Ebay and plan on collecting more. I have no idea why Ibanez stopped making them. They were the best Ibanez guitars in my opinion.

I can't prove it for sure, but all the SZ520s I've had are significantly lighter than my SZ720, which otherwise is the exact same size and shape. It could also be the grade of wood they used? My last Gibson was the chambered Classic Antique LP, and there's something familiar about the hollow, buttery tone....

And yeah, I love 'em! The perfect hardtail superstrat IMHO.

Re: Just got a Duncan Designed HB-112 (Screamin' Demon meets JB meets Duncan Distorti

I just wanted to say +1 in the SZ praise.
I agree on the 'hollow' sound quality, it's not bad but it can make finding the right pickups a bit of a problem.

I'll definitely buy a few more of these as well.

Re: Just got a Duncan Designed HB-112 (Screamin' Demon meets JB meets Duncan Distorti

So you guys that bought these within the last few months...what's the review?

Re: Just got a Duncan Designed HB-112 (Screamin' Demon meets JB meets Duncan Distorti

That sounds exactly like my first JB+ or Duncan Distortion Lite. I made it back when all the rage was the Custom Custom Custom or Custom with alnico 5. I swapped the alnico 5 from my JB with the smaller ceramic from my Custom.

I wasn't thrilled with the Custom 5 everyone was hyping back then but I WAS impressed with the JB ceramic. I remember people back then said the JB with a ceramic would be too bright and shrill to be useable and it would sound like garbage. It is actually preferable over the stock JB to me, and the one I made I also replaced the 6 slotted filisters with hex head poles for more high end clarity and tightness.

Just picked up a brand new Duncan Designed HB112 model to try out!

Duncan touts it as a Screamin' Demon with "more bite and more screams"! Interestingly enough, upon first look, it has the single row of hex screws just like the Screamin' Demon, but it measures in at 16.8K and has a Ceramic mag!

Starting to wonder if this pickup is more like a Duncan Designed version of the JB/Distortion with a single row of hex screws in place of slug poles and a regular-size Ceramic mag, as many forum members have used to create a "Distortion Lite" or "JB+" version, as they are sometimes called.

I can't wait to see what kind of articulation and punch this pickup packs! Looks like an excellent candidate for some good 'ol mag-swapping, too!
