Just Got a Sound City 150 Bass Amp

Well, I decided to buy it a few days ago. Awesome tube amp! Not as hi-fi nor as powerful as my Eden WT800B, but has it's charms..Lots of tube punch and sweet natural overdrive when pushed (think John Entwistle). It was made in '74 and i'll play it throught my Eden D610XLT (6x10) cab (for now). Fresh KT88's were recently installed, amp is all original. Back plate removed for pics.

Turns out it was previously owned by the owner of Sound City and was part of his collection. It had been in storage since mid-70's and has a total of about 10 hours on her since new!! She'll need a new cap job to bring her back %100 though..

Very cool. I was thinking about getting something tubey (SVT?) to replace my Eden WT-600 but in the end I like the size, weight and flexibility of the Eden. And, you know, it doesn't cost me any money to stick with what I've already got.

This one's a loud 50 watts, and sounds INCREDIBLE until you get it in a mix. It gets lost - seems like there's a lack of mids. Shame - but I'm going to be modding it to Plexi spec for a guitar amp. It's already most of the way there.

Now to get that Bag End deep 2x10" to go with my 2x12"...

Krall: cool score brother! She looks pretty **** clean too!

ModestCargo: Does that Traynor have a tube rectifier...if not it's much closer to 100 watts that 50...

They stopped that in 67 maybe 66?.., that is a 70 something.
The Yba-1 is a 45- 50 watter the YBA 1A MK II is the screamin 90 watter. Have em both, love em.

I think I can hear you all the way from Georgia!!
That is a pimp score man. Congrats. After hearing Christian's Sound City I am a believer. They are killer amps for not a whole lot of cheese!

Thanks! It's not every day you can score a basically NOS amp from the early seventies!

I have a question for you guys..I'm currently running it through my Eden 6x10 which is a 6 ohm cab..Should I run the head at 4 or 8 ohms? I've asked this question on a couple other forums and people are saying one or the other..Or that both would work..I would like a definitive answer from an expert!

That amp is YOU, my friend.

Run the impedance selector at 8. With TUBE amps, it's always better to mismatch with the cabinet lower rather than higher. Opposite of the way it is for solid state.

Ok cool..I'm currently running it at 8 but as mentioned, many have said 4 so I need reassurance.

Re: Just Got a Sound City 150 Bass Amp

With a high quality tube amp with high quality trannys you'd be just fine either way but if I were you I'd be hanging out on the 8 ohm tap too!

My 50+ is clean (both to look at and to listen to) but not as clean (in either way) as that thing for sure!
