Just got a steal on a JB.

Hello, I am new to posting here, but I was in my local Music Go Round on Sunday, and the owner was telling me about some guy calling up and said he had a box full of pickups, so I went to the case and looked around. There were all sorts of DiMarzios, Fenders, etc, then I come across this Seymour Duncan, so I turned it over, and it said TB4.

The guy had a Jackson that he had swapped the stock TB4 with a Dimarzio Evo, the tag on the Duncan said $19.99. So I traded in an 16 year old student trumpet that he had told me was worth about $20 for this like new JB.

Now I just need a guitar to put it in, I could hardly pass this up. I have a Mahogany Hardtail Ibanez RG with a standard spaced (which was the wrong size to get) SH-6 Distortion n the bridge. Sounds really good, but the spacing is off. I am thinking of moving the SH-6 to the neck and installing the TB4 JB in the bridge.
:)
Whattaya think?

I have a guitar here if you want to put it in IT :-) nice one.. looking for one myself.. Nice to get a good deal.

I think that might be a good switch..

I'd put the Distortion in bridge, and JB in neck, that way it should be more balanced, and many have liked the JB in neck for soloing w/ distortion. Though I dunno about the TB thing.

Re: Just got a steal on a JB.

Honestly, I'd keep them in different guitars. A DD bridge pickup just isn't meant for the neck position.

SD sells, or did sell at one time, a set of 2 Distortion pickups, for neck and bridge, similar to the JB/Jazz Hot Rodded set... I think it would sound pretty good in the neck position.

Distortion neck is what we are talking about here, but SH-6b.

They do sell sets of DD's, but the two pickups are wound for each position -- 12.7k for the neck and 16.6k for the bridge.

A typical pickup combination with the JB is something along the lines of a Jazz or a '59 -- pickups with alnico magnets around 7.5-8k, wound for the neck position. They're not exactly 16.6k bridge position pickups with huge ceramic magnets.

Re: Just got a steal on a JB.

Thanks for the clarification, I was not aware that the 2 DDs in that set were wound different. I think i still may try it out. I used to have an ESP with an 81 in the neck, that was a very hot pickup, and I like the lead sound that had. When I decide what to do with that JB, I will post results.

I'd put a JB in a different guitar and leave the Distortion in the bridge as it's primarily a bridge pickup, but you should give your setup a try and see how it goes. Since your guitar's body is mahogany, the JB is going to sound fatter and bassier than the Distortion. It might give a boomier sound, which I didn't like.

I got a Hot Karl at a great price!

BAWHAHAHAHA!!!!!

Re: Just got a steal on a JB.

As I've not used the JB before, does it work well with lower tunings, say CGCFAD? I am not really an Arch Enemy fan, but if I remember correctly he uses a JB in his guitar, and I think that is a tuning they use. I think the George Lynch Baritone ESP had a TB4 in it too, if I am not mistaken. What are some of your experiences/suggestions?
Thanks

Re: Just got a steal on a JB.

The JB is a bit loose on lower tunings, and some people describe its lows as flabby. But it's extremely popular for metal (especially leads and solos), and it comes in many of the nicer Jacksons and ESP's. Many famous metal guitarists have used the JB extensively, including Michael Amott, Willie Adler (Lamb of God), Dave Mustaine, etc.

If you end up wanting to tighten up the lows, we can help you do that as well with mods.
