Just got a Visual Sound Route 66...

I'm excited about this pedal. I got it because I wanted to replace my current compressor (a Marshall ED-1) and also add an OD box. I have decent amp gain but I wanted something external that I could use to enhance the distortion I already have in the amp.

You that have and use a Route 66, would you mind sharing your settings with me? I noticed, first off, that the comp is much more powerful and sensitive than my Marshall comp so I want to be careful to set it wisely and not squash my tone.

Thanks, in advance!

Re: Just got a Visual Sound Route 66...

The comp side has a lot of squish to it...not sure you can really dial it out but thats fine, the old Dyna Comps had a lot of squish too and those are classic comps!

The VS stuff is really cool, enjoy it!

Re: Just got a Visual Sound Route 66...

Those are great pedals.

The OD side is just a TS clone with an added bass boost and a couple other minor "tweaks". Nothing over the top. For settings, start with whatever you may have used on any other TS based overdrive and go from there. I usually use my OD's with the drive all the way down and the level all the way up, tone to taste (usually around noon on the dial).

i have an old one that i let robert borrow. its a great ts type pedal on one side and a decent comp on the other. i didnt like the buffer all that much but i was also horsing around with a wah pedal a the time.

Re: Just got a Visual Sound Route 66...

What do you want the comp for?

Squash or sustain? Both?
As an effect or all-the-time sound reinforcement?
Clean or Dirty?

I use a comp all the time. Since I mainly play a Telecaster and coming from more Country type stuff, I just kept it because like the spank and bit I get with it. It works nicely for me.

Re: Just got a Visual Sound Route 66...

Interesting...I can't imagine leaving a comp on all the time.

In the Route 66 which is first (comp or drive) and can they be switched??

Sorry if I missed a previous thread about it, but Butch, you have to explain your avatar. Is it real? Do you own it? Man, that thing is freakin' gorgeous.

Re: Just got a Visual Sound Route 66...

I've used one for a while. A buddy of mine has the V2 model. I love it but since I don't use a compressor, I don't really have a use for it in my rig. I try to get along with compressors but just can't. Not my thing.

Compressors are great tools that I have only recently learned how to use effectively but I can't imagine leaving one on all the time.

I was the same way until I got my first Telecaster. I was doing the Albert Lee thing (at least trying). I got one because I saw one fo my favorite local players using one. It was a Boss CS-2. He kept it on all the time. He played mostly clean and through a Bassman. In his rig, it was great. I use mine all the time; but it's not set at "full tilt compression".

Hi Rich,

It's an ESP LTD TE-202 made in Vietnam. Here's a better pic.

Funny thing is that the parts that are worn down to the grain have the satin clearcoat covering them. LOL

I disagree with that 100%

That's okay. Put it where you want. Only most studio pros that I personally know, as well as pro players, who use compressors, route their effects that way. They put it right after whatever expression pedal they use. But that's okay, you route your effects the way that suits you.

Yeah, I'm not currently using a comp, but when I did I certainly didn't want it after any OD pedal unless I was gating in between. Otherwise you're just compressing any noise introduced from the OD circuit into your tone.

And can you imagine how bad that would sound? OD > gate > comp? Talk about a tone-suck.

Nah Butch, you being a tele picker playing clean country licks through a baseman, I'd think a comp would be almost a requisite part of that formula about 100% of the time...

The key thing to keep in mind is that there is no right or wrong with this stuff but for me if you have an OD and a Comp and you put the comp first and run both the Comp and OD on then the OD won't really clean up with the guitars volume knob....that doesn't work for me.

Yep, I know where you're coming from...
