Just got an Alnico II Pro neck...

Installed it in my PRS SE Bernie Marsden and it sounds awesome! I was torn between the 59, A2Pro and Slash A2Pro but I went with the regular A2Pro with nickel covers. I has the warmth and clarity that I was searching for. I paired it with a Mike Turk Hot 59 bridge pickup. They're a match made in tonal heaven!

Re: Just got an Alnico II Pro neck...

I love the AII Pro too! I prefer alnico 2 neck pickups like the PGn, the AII Pro, Antiquity and the Seth Lover.

To me, they have a little less bass than alnico 5 pickups like the 59n and allow me to get a tone that's clearer and less muddy.

And I'm a big fan of the way humbuckers sound with nickel covers.

I know people say that the diff between covered and uncovered is slight...but it's not slight to me. To me a pickup with a cover vs the same pickup without a cover results in a sound that is so much different that the same pickup sounds like a different pickup.

I've also found that Modern wiring vs. 50's has the same effect. The same pickup with 50's wiring sounds like a different pickup if wired Modern.

I'm glad you're really digging it! I work with some artists who definitely prefer covers over open coil pickups too. It seems to kind of smooth everything out a little.

I like A2P's a lot. I think they're definitely better than PG's, which seem to get so much fanfare.

Re: Just got an Alnico II Pro neck...

Maybe I'm crazy but I try to get my pickups under the strings.

Oh man have I been doing it wrong all this time and I should have done it like the picture?

Good one. You got me there. I forgot to upload the finished product. :laugh2:

Right now - the A2P's are my fav Duncan set.

They live in my SG, and will stay there for ever !

I did order some 'other' SD units, but will start a thread about that later . . .

Re: Just got an Alnico II Pro neck...

That is a nice looking guitar.

I can't understand why there isn't more love for the A2 pro's, the matched set in my Michael Kelly make it sound creamy and bluesy (IMO), never had a problem with the output level and find them versatile too, mine are coil spilt which adds another dimesion.

+1. It's one of Duncan's best HB's.

Re: Just got an Alnico II Pro neck...

It is a great pickup set. And it's amazing to me how different it sounds with 50's wiring vs. modern wiring - like a different pickup set!

Sounds great either way but it gets a nice grit on top with 50's wiring. Sounds fatter with modern wiring.

The difference is dramatic though.

Same is true of the Pearly Gates set.

Re: Just got an Alnico II Pro neck...

BTW, the AII Pro set is actually the Duncan Jazz.

Same pickups.

Only diff is alnico 2 in the AII Pro and Alnico 5 in the Jazz.

Re: Just got an Alnico II Pro neck...

Very bluesy clean tone. Warm but clear. I love diming the gain on my amp then rolling off the neck pickup volume to get a break up tone to a slight crunch for blues.

Re: Just got an Alnico II Pro neck...

And I opted for modern with treble bleed... is it that different with 50s?

Yes, it is. The '50s mod keeps the p'up's tone the same when using the volume control, the treble bleed mod acts as a High-Pass filter, making the p'ups brighter the more the volume control is reduced.
