now what amp settings on my Marshall AVT20 would you recommend for the following tones:
1) early Angus, think "Let there be Rock"
2) clean and glassy, kind of jazzy
3) early Clapton

Thanks!

usually if I want to get those tones out of an AVT20, I set my "get a new amp" control on maximum.

Not familiar with that version of the Marshall. But Clapton tones come from all tube Marshalls. The SG tone is a '68 Plexi with El34's. His earlier stuf was with a Marshall 2X12 combo 50w.

Jeff....Are you certain on the EL34s? Clapton used KT66s also....I've read his Bluesbreaker amp had KT66s....Probably the awesome Gold Lion series...

John,

You're right about the KT66s in the Bluesbreaker combo, but didn't Marshall ship the 100w Plexi's with EL34's? I may be wrong.

John,

I just checked the "Those Were The Days" Cream website and you're right. The KT66's were used in the Super Leads until 1967, when they switched to EL34's. So my guess is the early cream stuff was with the '66's and the Winterland/Fillmore stuf is the EL34's. Interesting read.
