Was speaking with MJ about the JB Alnico 2 mag swap. She was asking someone in the back ground about my specific questions about tone like: Differences in bottom end? (answer was no from the background), is the pup articulate under distortion? (answer was yes from the background). She mentioned that this is a mod that is done for a number of artist (which she couldn't name) and the voice in the background said "that's also the mod I use". I asked MJ who the voice in the background was and she told me it was one Mr. Seymour Duncan who was basically answering my questions. I have now taken the A2 out of my CC and replaced it with a Ceramic and put the A2 in my JB. I will install it over the weekend in my strat and will post my findings. Can't freekin wait!!! :cool2::cool2::cool2:

So you're saying there really is a Seymour Duncan and all the pickups are NOT made in Chinese sweatshops?

Re: just got off the phone with custom shop and....

A forum bro named nuntius actually posted clips on soundclick of his A2 JB. Sounded very nice. I don't see him around here anymore.

Yup, it's now a Custom.

Anyone who has done this mag swap on their jb, did you use 250k volume pots or 500k???

500K, I have one in the guitar in my avatar. Spec wise, it looks strangely like the CS DeMartini, at least mine does, it's wound to just over 18K. It's my new favorite pickup.

500K, though I turn the tone down a bit, especially for leads. It doesn't sound quite the same with a 250K pot and the tone turned up.

I did this about 5 years ago. Tried a lot of great pickups since, but nothing else does those chirpy little Keith Richards semi-chords quite as well.

Very nice.

I've had a JB w/A2 in my Hamer for some time and love it. Very warm as well as articulate.

Re: just got off the phone with custom shop and....

well I tried the A2 JB in my strat (am std w/fr) and immediately noticed the lack of the infamous ice pick in the forehead highs (they are actually usable now) with a little more focus in the lower midrange BUT with spongier, softer bottom end. The JB isn't really noted for having a lot of bottom end with the A5 and the A2 didn't help it any. Solos seem to sing more in the vain of 80's metal but warmer. I think it's an easy tone to pull emotion out of (feeling and expression). I believe I heard that the A2 was the original magnet in the "older" jbs which would explain why some folks say get an older jb, they sound better. For me this was a great experiment and I will keep the A2 jb for sometime. It DOES NOT sound like VanHalen or even close, but it is a great mod on a good pickup equalling great sound which equals lots of grins when I'm practicing at home (will have to wait for the next rehearsal with the band to see how it fairs). Bottom line, try it, you'll like it.

I can totally believe that. I had an old 80s one wound by MJ and it sounded awesome...had that big A2 midrange. Wow...that was great sound.
