just got some surfers in my strat

Man I love these pickups. Even more than the Texas antiquities in my other strat. The bridge has a great bite when over driven , and it's glassy but not ear piercing on the clean channel.

The neck and middle are butter smooth too. I love the clean tones coming out o them. It's more hollow than the Texas pickups. They have a nice chunky feel when over driven too.

I'm running em through a Traynor YCV20 which seems to compliment them very well

Doesn't get any better than the Surfers, IMO. That glassy clean hollow chunk you describe is what they're all about.
