Just installed an SH-5 in my Les Paul

man. I should have listened to you guys before. Sounds great. Very crunchy and sounds heavier than the super distortion it has replaced. Very pleased. It drives my Bogner much nicer. Lovely heavy natural gain sound.

It is probably going to be replaced within the next couple of months with a Motor City Afwayu though :D

Re: Just installed an SH-5 in my Les Paul

When Seymour made the Custom, as the answer to a beefed up PAF, he knew that the hottest it should be is 14.4K. That formula luckily also worked for A2, A3, A4, A5, Ceramic, and A8. That's why Gibson also uses it for their 498T in Les Pauls.

It's hard to go wrong, using a Custom 5 or Custom into a Bogner Shiva.

Re: Just installed an SH-5 in my Les Paul

The SH-5 is THE pickup for an LP for most modern applications, and it even plays nice with vintage spec pickups. My other favorite thing about the custom is that it does vintage tones convincingly enough too.

Rock on, brotha! :headbang:

Re: Just installed an SH-5 in my Les Paul

I have a Custom in my Hamer which is essentially an LP clone. I have to to try a PG neck =). The Custom just sounds...right. I tried the CC and the C5 and they didn't do it for me. Along with the JB, Dimebucker, Distortion, and Rio Grande BBQ =). All had something I liked, but none could cover as much ground as the Custom and none sound so HUGE in that guitar.

Re: Just installed an SH-5 in my Les Paul

I had a Custom in a Les Paul and it really didn't work out for me.

A C5 in a PRS, but something about that rubbed me wrong too. I bet they'd sound the way they were intended if the pickups were switched. ;)

Just curious, what Hamer is it? I've recently bought a 1995 Korean made Hamer Slammer Archtop SAT (kind of a "Sunburst") and it's very well built. Original humbuckers sucked hairy squirrel, now I've got an DM PAF neck and an old early '80s MMK 45 in it, sounds and feels great. But the MMK 45 have to go when I sell the Vantage VP795 I borrowed it from, looking for a similar sounding PU now. Breed neck in bridge made the Hamer too fat, SH-5 was more OK but..., SH-4 JB oh no the infamous mid-spike.

It's a Hamer Monaco Elite. Mahogany body, mahogany neck, maple top, rosewood fretboard. Very Les Paul like.

Google'd it and it looks just like a cross of a 'Paul and my guitar!
My Archtop's got the double cut-away of the "Sunburst" though, with the upper horn just slightly longer than the lower horn.
