Just one pup

Hey hey. I'm looking to upgrade the stock pup in my late-70's Conn (C-Series) electric. It's got a spot for one standard humbucker, but I'm thinking about something a little different. Any recommendations for a 1-pup guitar? I've been thinking about the P-Rails or maybe a Phat Cat. Love to hear some ideas. I play mostly rock/blues/jazz-type of stuff. Ha! Pretty much anything.

Just put in a 59 or other paf style pickup and wire in a coil tap under the volume pot for an extra sound. Just make sure you get a humbucker with 4 conductors so you can do this.

i'm not too sure about using a vintage output humbucker with a coil cut, the single coil mode will only have a resistance measuring around 4k which would be pretty thin. a phat cat might be a good choice though, i'll get back to you once i give my phat cat a test run in the bridge:naughty:

Blues, jazz, rock? Phat cat or a 59. I say Phat Cat for p-90 goodness!

I hate "me too!" posts, but a '59 will do exactly what you want, although you might want to consider swapping out the stock Alnico 5 for an Alnico 2 for a jazzier, bluesier sweetness. A Phat Cat will do all you want, and much, much more -- but the damn hum...

It's a proven scientific fact that people who are annoyed by 60cycle hum do not know how to rock.

Now they could have forgotten how to rock, or just need to be shown how to rock properly, but 60 cycle hum is only an issue when you're not playing -- and if you're not playing, turn the **** volume knob down.

Get a P-Rails in that guitar...keep it from being a one-trick pony and get the most bang for your buck.

lol Point taken! Still, when you record digitally in an electromagnetically loud environment, the hum is much, much louder than on stage -- you can still hear the hum while playing.

Thanks for the tips... still torn between the Phat Cat (love that P-90 sound) and the P-Rails (lots of options *including* the P-90 sound). Similar price too, I think. For those in the know, is the sound derived from the P-90 "part" of the P-Rail similar to that of the Phat Cat itself? That'd help make my choice an easy one me thinks.
