Just opened up the old fender 212

I recently got a bandmaster head and cab. It sounded good and i bought it expecting maybe a speaker change and a few new tubes. I oppened up the cab and it has two 12'' Altec Lansing 600B 8 ohm speakers in it. How do these compare to Jensens etc.. I was thinking of replacing them with jensen c12ns. Would this be worthwhile?

well, how do they sound?

I'm not familiar with the model #'s on Altecs, but I've read that Santana's favorite speakers are Altecs.

I'd be curious to know if they're original.

well, I kinda answered my own question .. according to the Fender amp field guide , they came with Jensens, Oxfords, Utahs, and JBLs, depending on the year.

Carlos likes the 417-HC Altecs. See if you can find that number anywhere on that speaker. Lew

Re: Just opened up the old fender 212

I have to be honest, I've never heard of Altecs being used in Fender Amps, but it doesn't really surprise me, since they used practically everything else, Jensens and Celestions and well as EV's in their twins for a time. However, my favorite speaker is one that I'm not even using right now. It's an Altec, but I don't know the model number. I bought it as a "junk" speaker to replace a blown Celestion. Boy, did I have that backwards! That speaker will take anything and everything that I throw at it. It does seem to have a very Santanaesque vibe to it. I finally blew it about 5 years ago and had it reconed, because I thought I'd use it somewhere. Just haven't found the right application. What do yours look like? Maybe mine is a similar model.

I don't think Altec-Lansings ever came stock in any Fenders.

JBL's? Yes. Altec's? No.

They sound fine, I'm just wondering if you guys have to say about Jensens, and if they would sound better than my altecs. I guess they must be pretty good if Santana uses them, but I'm not looking for that super overdriven sound he has. More of a thick, vintage fender clean sound that will break up around 5 or 6. Bandmasters are 40 watt amps I think.

Re: Just opened up the old fender 212

are you asking about original Jensens, or the RIs.

they're both good, but not the same speaker, of course :(

original Jensen C12Ns are probably considered one of the all time greatest speakers

I have the RIs in both a DRRI and my Blues Junior, the amp that I play the most. They are just a fine speaker, especially for the $$$.

Speaker choices, like a lot of other things, boil down to personal taste, so the question is, what tone do you want, what music do you play, etc .....

I always thought that JBL, and Altec-Lansing, were kind of one in the same. JBL, stands for James B. Lansing. I may be wrong, it's just a theory I came up with on my own.

They're related, but not the same. There is some cool history on Jim Lansing here. Duane allman also used Altec's in his 4x12's
