Just Ordered A New Mixing Board

I just put in the order for one of these for the studio, I'll post a little review once it arrives if anyone is interested. It's replacing this dinosaur and will be used for recording and some live sound reinforcement. I've never used any Allen and Heath equipment, but I've heard good things and decided to take the plunge.

I think you'll be pleased with the sound. I've much preferred Allen & Heath stuff I've used to Mackie. Get ready to have a usable EQ and more "open" preamps.

Re: Just Ordered A New Mixing Board

I'm really looking forward to it, the Mackie is partially broken (none of the built in level lights work anymore so we're using an external VU meter), and it's just excessively massive. The Allen and Heath has the same number of inputs but is half as wide, is a USB audio interface, and promises to sound better.

Re: Just Ordered A New Mixing Board

I've had a GL series 24 channel A&H for years. It's definitely a step up from Mackie.

So sit behind your new desk and have fun.

Re: Just Ordered A New Mixing Board

I have no experience with the ZED but we used a GL2000 for half a decade in the broadcast productions studio I worked for back in time, as a nerve centre of the whole production gear. It was great. The preamps match (or sometimes outperform) many dedicated external preamps and the EQs are really great. I even used the EQ for mastering purposes when I re-mastered an old Gary Moore song for a radio once and it subtly opened the sound without any harshness. All in all, it was a superb production board. Very reliable, components did not wear out at all. I'm sure they kept the quality. ZED series must be great.

Re: Just Ordered A New Mixing Board

I was originally looking at a Mackie Onyx, but I realized that I really don't need 16 channels of simultaneous multitrack, and if I ever decide that I do, I can simply spend the price difference on an interface rack because the Allen and Heath is so much more affordable.

EDIT: plus the ZED24 has the same number of mic pres as the Mackie, plus four extra stereo channels which will come in useful because I have a few stereo sources.

Re: Just Ordered A New Mixing Board

Looks really cool. How are you going to use it for recording? Do you have an audio card with multiple channel I/O? I've been tempted to go that route for a while; would love to hear how you're using yours!

Re: Just Ordered A New Mixing Board

The mixer acts as a stereo audio source over USB, and if I need more channels of multitrack then that I can hook the effect sends up to my MOTU 828 rack. If I find myself doing that a lot I will probably invest in a new MOTU 8pre so that I can link it with the 828 for 16 channels of input.
