Just ordered a Triple Shot from the online store

So after much research I have decided to use a Tripleshot with my P-Rail pickup.

I've been working on a bastardized/modded Melody Maker and have been convinced by users on the forums here that this would be a good choice.

My only worry with the P-Rails was that they are made of what seems to be thin plastic and I've heard stories of them breaking and cracking or coming unsoldered in the box.

Has this been the case with anyone?

Any other positive reviews or testimonials?

Also someone mentioned wiring it in reverse?

I haven't heard anything in regards to its structural integrity. I'm sure you'll be fine.

I've got a dozen of them on my guitars...no problems, just wonderful versatility.

note: I like to use the alternate wiring of the Triple Shots so that the switches point toward the active coil. The standard wiring will have the switches point to the inactive coil (away from the active coil) which has always seemed just the opposite to me..crazy even.

Having never actually seen a TS ring up close that was a big help.

I've been jonesing for a set of TS rings for the Explorer I'm building right now. I'll probably end up getting them in a few paychecks. Hopefully I'll have SOMETHING done to the guitar, like the neck glued in, by then. LOL

What I referred to as the alternate wiring is what TS calls "reverse wiring". Sorry if I confused you.

In any case, I like it much better than the standard way of wiring the TS...it's much more intuitive...like a Strat selector switch pointing to the pup that is active. How confusing would it be if the Strat switch was wired backwards!!

I'm interested in some Triple Shots too, but concerned that they may not fit. The mounting ring hole spacing on both of my (import) LPs is appx 84.5mm (center to center), while the TS rings seem to be a few mm less than that (per their spec).

I'd have assumed all this stuff was standardized decades ago...!

It was. Every major manufacturer standardized on their own standard. :) Aftermarket providers like SD make differently sized parts, like bridge humbuckers, to suit. Had they all got together and miraculously agreed on common dimensions etc. we would all be playing guitars with 25 1/8 inch necks and 20 frets.

The varying sizes shouldn't be a problem as long as you don't mind filling in the existing screw holes and starting some new ones at a slight offset. The extra width comes from the wings on either side as the hole for the pickup is the same size.

A quick measure shows that the TS rings would not fit my Epi Sheraton or (broken) Les Paul (84.5mm), but would fit my Cort Zenox Z44 and the no name hot rod I am rebuilding. Would a SD TS ring actually fit a real Gibson LP without adjustment?

Ah, like the old saying, "Standards are a good thing, that's why there's so many of them."

If 84.5 is common (for Asian imports anyway), then I have to wonder if these'll go in without redrilling. I know the TS rings aren't hugely popular (nobody at my local big box had even heard of them), but you don't hear about such (not entirely trivial) surgery required to get them in. You do however hear about them being somewhat rubbery (often called "cheap feeling"), so I wonder if this allows them an extra mm or three of give?

Yes!?

Had a close look at images on the Gibson, Epi and Fender websites. Didn't check Squier. It is a little hard to tell but Gibson appear to use the smaller TS sized rings and Epi the larger rings. The Fender MiM Special Edition Telecaster FMT HH with an SD PG bridge and a '59 neck uses the TS size. I tried the FMT recently, very nice tone and good looking too.

It would be no good trying to bend/stretch a TS ring to fit the wider spaced mounting holes because then the pickup mounting holes would be in the wrong places instead.

No. It really doesn't change the pup mounting hole spacing.

Seems to match the US/Gibson spec anyway, but not (some/many/most?) imports.

I'm ordering a set, and will update on the installation. Main concern for me is that the TS + PR's setup will cost about as much as the guitar they're planned for. Doing the minor surgery (if needed) to it is not really any problem, except that if I were to put it up for sale, I'll probably be better off to revert it back to its original state (ie, don't give away a bunch of free upgrades). Re-redrilling back to the original set of holes seems too weird, but I guess finding a set of cheap rings with US hole pattern should be an easy option.
