Hey, no Rio BBQ/Texas this time around? I hear that Vinmtage Hot is really nice! I think another good pickup with probably a bit more girth would be the C-5.

I just picked a VV PAF up from Ebay. Should be here today or tommorow. It will be going in the neck of a chambered, mahogany tele that currently sports a Dimarzio ( wonderful sounding pup btw ) Classic PAF. While I dig the Classic, I'm looking forward to the added detail the VV will provide.

Same happened to me,teleblooz. It was a Bridge version, which i put into the neck of a Hamer Special. Hell of a sound i like it to death. But the lows are too big to get a perfect match with the other pup (rewound 9k DiMarzio PAF from 1979). What did you get neck or bridge version?

I played around with the BBQ/Texas set a bit last night in each of my guitars and man they are pretty transparent as they really took on the tone of the individual guitar. I am quite impressed to say the least. Not too hot/not too cold but just right. Some guitars it seems dark and in some it seem bright based on the guitar....but that is fine because I like the guitar to come through and I like my guitars to sound a bit different as they should.

I got the neck version. I was hoping it would be here last night. I had to play last night and was going to pop it in there real quick. Maybe tonight!
I'm using a VV Hot T in the bridge right now and I can't believe how dang happy I am with that pickup. The two sound awesome together and the Hot T by itself does the twang/spank thing very well. My fav though is to trun the tone control down about a 1/4 and take jsut a smidge off the guitars volume control. Fat, juicy, liquid tones.
Back to the VV PAF.....I've heard them in a solid body and really dug em, so I'm quite anxious to hear it in a chambered body. hopefully, it will be agood match. FWIW, one of the absolute best sounding neck buckers I've had in this guitar was a Seth Lover. If all else fails, I'll pop another one of those
( or an Antiquity ) back in.

I have the V Hot Paf in the bridge of my LP and it is a great pickup. I have the Duncan CC, 59 & Alnicos in other guitars but wanted something different. The V H PAF is quite good. It has the vintage tone but a bit more extra overall. It is warm but still cutting, has a nice EQ balance, one I wish Duncan offered. If you have a guitar that the CC is too much mids, the C5 is not enough mids, the 59 is too bright and the JB is too much of that honk, the Virtual Hot PAF is worth a try and they are priced right too.
The only pickup I have not tried yet are the Rio BBQs- can anyone elaborate on what they compare most too?

I'm glad I put off getting new pickups. I've often wanted something exactly like this, but nothing was made and I didn't want to foot the bill for two custom wound pups. Now I can get them production made and in double creme. I think I'll be glad I waited. It will be SO nice to have something low output for a change.
My pups should be in sometime on Monday.

I started getting into hand wound boutique pickups because I thought maybe they were better than standard Duncans and Dimarzios but I am learning that is not necessarily true so I would like to try the VHPAF as it sounds like it is a nice pickup. I don't think it would be as full or fat as something like a C-5, BBQ, or CC but it would be more vintage overall based on the description. Sounds like the Wolfetone Marshallhead or WCR Goodwood.
The BBQ is one of my favorites. It is about 12.5k wound with very thin wire but somehow they hit a perfect reading and it sits in the middle of hot/cold, modern/vintage, dark/bright....just a nice versatile do it all pickup that I love - like a C-5 with more mids.
I like the transparency of the BBQ. It really sounds different in all my guitars. It sounds big and fat, yet clear.

Well...I finally got these pickups in my McNaught and they sound GREAT! They can really cover all bases, including metal. The neck pup is very smooth for distorted leads and is clear as a bell when played clean. It's prob my favorite clean neck pup to date! The bridge pup can really do it all....and I love the balance/clarity it has. Also, the bridge pup has this great vocal quality to it that makes it really stand out when playing leads. Two thumbs up for these pups!

I think the lesson being taught here is that with low output pickups combined with a med to hot amp, you are actually hearing the instrument again instead of the "compressed" tone of a very hot pup being fed into a very hot amp. I think that the hotter the pickup you start to run into a version of headroom issues with the amp which gives that compressed tone (but what do I know, I just a guitar player who loves low output pickups!!)
I do have this setup in a Wolfgang special (American Version) and they are staying in that guitar. I posted a clip of what they sound like, here it is again for those interested. Nothing great just a little jam.

That sounds cool.....that's my only *real* complain with lower output bridge pickups....especially A2s....they seem to be weak and fall apart on palm mutes for really heavy stuff(regardless of the amp or the gain it has).

Walt, I have to agree with you on the low output pups. I realize for various players, nothing but hot pups will do, but for the tones I like, low output
( and preferably, unpotted ) buckers do the trick. The clarity and articulation is so much better and they allow the true tone of the instrument and playing subtle nuacnes to shine through. I tend to set mine lower than most and this seems to give a more complex, open tone. Again...not for everyone, but they sure to the trick for me!
